WASHINGTON (AP) A group of twelve U.S. senators, united by a common cause, has called for an investigation into why the Department of Justice (DOJ) did not release all records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein by the deadline set by Congress. The senators are demanding that the departments internal watchdog, the acting Inspector General, look into the delay, with the goal of shedding light on why certain files were withheld beyond the agreed-upon timeframe.
On Wednesday, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined eleven Democratic colleagues in urging Acting Inspector General Don Berthiaume to reevaluate the department's actions. Their joint letter highlighted concerns that the DOJs failure to meet the transparency requirements of the newly enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act may be further complicating the already opaque nature of the Epstein case.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed just last month, was designed to ensure that all information related to Epsteins criminal activities, as well as his ties to other influential figures, is released to the public. The senators expressed their frustration over what they perceived as the departments failure to comply with the law. Their concerns were centered around previous administrations, especially under Donald Trump, which had been criticized for withholding or delaying the release of documents connected to Epstein.
