A group of twelve U.S. senators, including one Republican, has urged the Department of Justice's internal watchdog to investigate the delay in releasing Jeffrey Epstein's files. They seek transparency over why certain documents were withheld, despite the new Epstein Files Transparency Act, and call for accountability in the case.
WASHINGTON (AP) A group of twelve U.S. senators, united by a common cause, has called for an investigation into why the Department of Justice (DOJ) did not release all records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein by the deadline set by Congress. The senators are demanding that the departments internal watchdog, the acting Inspector General, look into the delay, with the goal of shedding light on why certain files were withheld beyond the agreed-upon timeframe.
On Wednesday, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined eleven Democratic colleagues in urging Acting Inspector General Don Berthiaume to reevaluate the department's actions. Their joint letter highlighted concerns that the DOJs failure to meet the transparency requirements of the newly enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act may be further complicating the already opaque nature of the Epstein case.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed just last month, was designed to ensure that all information related to Epsteins criminal activities, as well as his ties to other influential figures, is released to the public. The senators expressed their frustration over what they perceived as the departments failure to comply with the law. Their concerns were centered around previous administrations, especially under Donald Trump, which had been criticized for withholding or delaying the release of documents connected to Epstein.
One of the primary points of contention raised in the letter was the fact that Epsteins involvement in political and social circles extended across both major political parties, which has made it difficult to get a clear picture of his influence and criminal behavior. The senators are urging for an impartial and independent investigation to ensure that any connections to Epsteins illegal activities, whether through negligence or intentional collaboration, are brought to light.
The senators collective message is clear: they believe only a thorough and unbiased review of the records can guarantee that all the details of Epstein's operations are revealed to the public. They argue that any failure to meet the full transparency requirements of the Epstein Files Transparency Act would only serve to shield those who may have been complicit in Epsteins crimes.
By calling for an investigation, the twelve senators are seeking to hold the Department of Justice accountable for its actions and to ensure that the public has access to the complete set of documents related to Epsteins criminal activities. The issue has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly due to Epsteins high-profile connections and the subsequent revelations about his abuse and exploitation of young women. The senators are adamant that only through complete transparency can justice truly be served, both for the victims and for the broader public's right to know the truth.
