United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recently faced backlash following a controversial strike on a suspected drug vessel in the Caribbean Sea.
According to reports, some lawmakers have raised concerns that the U.S. military might have violated international law by launching a second strike on the same vessel on September 2, resulting in the deaths of the two survivors from the initial attack.
During a cabinet meeting, Hegseth defended the operation, stating, I did not personally see survivors. The thing was on fire. It exploded, theres fire, theres smoke. This is called the 'fog of war.'
The phrase fog of war traditionally refers to the challenges and incomplete information military personnel face during combat, rather than literally describing smoke or fire. It is a concept also referenced in strategy and role-playing games, where players are deliberately kept unaware of certain elements to simulate battlefield uncertainty.
On the r/military subreddit, both active and former service members responded strongly to Hegseths remarks. One commenter pointed out, He actually used 'fog of war' literally, referring to smoke from the explosion blocking the view. Conveniently forgetting that the drone has thermal imaging.
Others criticized the statement as an insufficient justification for potential wrongdoing. Comments included: Fog of war isnt an excuse for war crimes. Especially when youre sitting in an office live streaming the attack from a half a continent away, and Fog of war doesn't exist when you have a drone feed where you can see the survivors clinging to wreckage of their former boat.
Veterans on the forum also highlighted the simplicity of the target, noting that a boat in the open ocean is highly visible and easy to monitor. Some described Hegseths use of the term as a metaphor for confusion or incompetence, rather than a legitimate operational condition.
The debate underscores the tension between military terminology, real-world accountability, and public perception of high-level decision-making during combat operations.
Analysis: Hegseth's "Fog of War" Comment Under Scrutiny
The recent statement by United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, describing a deadly strike on a suspected drug vessel in the Caribbean as shrouded in the "fog of war," has sparked significant criticism. Lawmakers and military personnel alike question the accuracy and appropriateness of using this term to justify the deaths of survivors from a second strike.
Veterans and active service members on r/military have emphasized that modern surveillance tools, including thermal imaging on drones, would have made it possible to see survivors clearly. Critics argue that Hegseth’s description of smoke and fire as "fog of war" oversimplifies operational realities and risks being perceived as an excuse for potential violations of international law.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension between military language and public accountability. While "fog of war" is traditionally used to describe uncertainty in combat, its literal application to a monitored drone strike raises questions about decision-making processes and transparency in high-level military operations.
