The United States military carried out a lethal operation against a suspected drug trafficking vessel in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, according to Pentagon reports. The operation took place on Thursday amid ongoing scrutiny of US maritime strikes, particularly after it emerged that a similar vessel had been targeted twice on September 2. Analysts have warned that such actions could be considered violations of international law.
In a statement on X, the US Southern Command confirmed that the strike was authorized by Secretary of State Pete Hegseth. The statement explained that the military "executed a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel in international waters linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization." It added, "Intelligence verified that the vessel was transporting illegal narcotics along a recognized trafficking corridor in the Eastern Pacific. Four male operatives on board were killed."
Since the start of the campaign, the Trump administration has reportedly eliminated more than 80 individuals suspected of drug smuggling. Human rights organizations have consistently criticized these operations, describing them as probable extrajudicial killings. The latest strike coincides with an increase in US military presence near Venezuelas coastline, as President Trump has repeatedly warned that land-based operations could occur imminently.
