On Wednesday, Vice President Vance referenced President Trumps America First approach while speaking to soldiers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, humorously noting that turkey is the most quintessentially American holiday meat.
Think about turkey. Honestly, who truly enjoys turkey? Vance asked the troops, acknowledging that many raised their hands despite the widespread sentiment. The truth is, very few people roast an 18-pound turkey randomly. Its not something anyone does regularly because turkey itself isnt that flavorful. But on Thanksgiving, one of our most iconic holidays, Americans prepare a turkey because its part of our tradition, he said.
Vance mentioned that he plans to deep-fry his Thanksgiving turkey, while adding that chicken remains universally enjoyed. Thanksgiving embodies the American spirit because it centers on gratitude, he emphasized. He extended his appreciation to the soldiers for their service, recalling remarks made by Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in September.
We value soldiers who think independently, not just follow orders, Vance said. The most powerful weapon the U.S. possesses isnt a tank, a helicopter, or a rifle its our soldiers. We are proud of you and will support you every step of the way.
Vance also conveyed a message from the president: The president is proud of our troops and each one of you. He wants to wish you a happy Thanksgiving and express gratitude for all that you do.
During their visit to Kentucky, Vice President Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance served a Thanksgiving meal to the troops, distributing mashed potatoes and dinner rolls alongside their children. This event followed the White Houses annual turkey pardoning ceremony, where President Trump granted clemency to turkeys Gobble and Waddle, humorously commenting on the validity of former President Bidens pardons.
Author's Analysis: Thanksgiving and the Military Message
Vice President Vance’s remarks at Fort Campbell highlighted the symbolic connection between American traditions and military service. By referencing President Trump’s “America First” approach and the Thanksgiving turkey, Vance emphasized cultural continuity alongside national pride.
Vance acknowledged the humor in discussing turkey, but also reinforced the deeper message: Thanksgiving represents gratitude, a value he tied directly to honoring soldiers. His comments on independent thinking and the strength of the U.S. military underlined the administration’s focus on both morale and individual responsibility within the armed forces.
The event, which included serving a meal alongside his family, extended the administration’s personal touch, linking the White House’s ceremonial turkey pardons with a direct engagement with service members. This approach combines tradition, public messaging, and recognition of military service in a single event.
