Targeting our Somali community in this way is completely misguided, Walz said. These are professionalseducators, artists, doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurswho contribute energy and diversity to Minnesota. For him to single them out randomly makes no sense. Focus on your responsibilities: enforce the law, protect our borders, but do so with respect for the tradition of welcoming refugees.
On his Truth Social platform over Thanksgiving, Trump claimed Somali migrants are taking over the once-great State of Minnesota and criticized Walz with a derogatory term. The former president also alleged that Somali gangs were roaming the streets while residents stayed confined to their homes.
Minnesota hosts the largest Somali community in the U.S., with about 107,000 residents as of 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Recently, the Trump administration revoked legal protections for Somali residents in Minnesota, effective immediately.
