Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) responded sharply to President Trump after being mentioned in a Thanksgiving post. On the social platform X, Walz demanded, Release the MRI results. Last month, Trump revealed he had an MRI at Walter Reed Military Center, but the White House has yet to make the scan results public.
In a detailed post on his Truth Social account on Thursday, Trump criticized Walz, using a derogatory term aimed at people with disabilities and accusing the governor of failing to address the influx of Somali refugees in Minnesota, citing either fear, incompetence, or both.
Trump stated, Hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are taking over the once great State of Minnesota. Somalian gangs are roaming the streets, preying on residents who remain confined to their homes, hoping to avoid confrontation.
Minnesota hosts the largest Somali population in the United States, with approximately 107,000 people in 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
Last Friday, Trump announced the immediate termination of legal protections for Somali residents in Minnesota, asserting that Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that state. In August, Congress noted that 705 Somalis in the U.S. hold temporary protected status.
The administration is also reviewing green cards issued to migrants from Somalia and 18 additional countries following the identification of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, as the suspect in a shooting that targeted two National Guard members. Lakanwal arrived in the U.S. in 2021.
One of the victims, 20-year-old Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, died Thursday, while the other, 24-year-old U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Analysis: Minnesota Political Tensions and Immigration Debate
Governor Tim Walz's response to former President Trump's social media post highlights the escalating tension between state and federal perspectives on immigration and public safety. By demanding the release of Trump's MRI results, Walz shifted attention to transparency and accountability at the federal level.
Trump's post on Truth Social criticized Walz and focused on the Somali population in Minnesota, framing it as a security concern. The claims about "Somali gangs" contrast with U.S. Census Bureau data, which confirms Minnesota hosts the largest Somali community in the country, approximately 107,000 people as of 2024.
The federal administration's recent actions, including reviewing green cards for migrants from Somalia and other countries, were prompted by a violent incident involving an Afghan national. This decision has implications for Somali residents with temporary protected status, raising questions about policy consistency and potential impacts on established communities.
Overall, the confrontation underscores the politicization of immigration issues in Minnesota, the role of social media in shaping public narratives, and the tension between federal enforcement and local governance priorities.
