President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two West Virginia National Guard members injured in a shooting near the White House on Wednesday, has passed away. Trump made the statement while calling military personnel on Thanksgiving.
Trump described Beckstrom, 20, as a "highly respected, young, magnificent person," adding, "She's just passed away. She's no longer with us. She's looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her. It's just happened." The other guard member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro shared her condolences on social media, calling Beckstrom a hero for volunteering to serve Washington, D.C. on Thanksgiving and sacrificing her life. She added, "May she rest in peace. It is now time to avenge her death and secure justice."
Details of the Shooting
Authorities revealed that the attack occurred around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday near the Farragut West Metro station. The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, allegedly traveled from Washington State to target the National Guard members, firing a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. According to Pirro, one guard member was struck, and the shooter continued to attack before other guards intervened and subdued him.
Official Responses
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey visited the injured soldiers in the hospital and urged residents to pray for the families. He emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure justice. "These facts demand a comprehensive investigation so we can bring those responsible to justice," Morrisey said. He also highlighted the voluntary nature of the Guardsmens service in D.C., praising their dedication to the mission.
Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II of the D.C. National Guard expressed deep sympathy for the families affected by the attack, noting that the lives of those involved are permanently changed due to the actions of a single individual.
Suspect Information
Pirro stated that Lakanwal will face multiple charges, including assault with intent to harm and criminal possession of a weapon, with potential adjustments depending on the victims outcomes. The suspect, an Afghan national who came to the U.S. in 2021, applied for asylum in 2024 and was granted it in April 2025. Authorities are investigating his connections in Afghanistan and any associates both abroad and within the U.S.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the investigation as ongoing and potentially related to terrorism. Authorities have searched Lakanwal's home in Bellingham, Washington, and are interviewing other locations for further information.
Trump Administration and Security Measures
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida during the shooting. Trump labeled the attack an "act of hatred" and ordered additional security measures, including the deployment of 500 more National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. He also directed a review of Afghan immigrants admitted under the previous administration.
The National Guards deployment to the capital was part of Trumps federal takeover and crime reduction strategy implemented in August, with 2,188 personnel assigned to D.C. as of the latest report. During Thanksgiving events at the White House, Trump praised the Guards work in improving safety across the city.
Analysis: The White House Shooting and Its Implications
The tragic death of U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom marks a sobering moment for the National Guard and the broader Washington, D.C. community. Beckstrom, only 20 years old, was serving voluntarily on Thanksgiving, highlighting the personal commitment of Guard members to national security even during holidays.
The circumstances of the attack, including the premeditated nature by Rahmanullah Lakanwal and his journey from Washington State, underscore vulnerabilities in public security around federal facilities. Authorities are treating the incident with heightened seriousness, investigating potential terrorism links while preparing multiple criminal charges.
Official responses from President Trump, Governor Morrisey, and military leaders emphasize both mourning and accountability. The administration’s immediate deployment of additional National Guard personnel to D.C. and review of immigration procedures reflects a dual focus on short-term security and policy reassessment.
As the investigation unfolds, the case highlights broader issues: the risks faced by National Guard members, the challenges of safeguarding public spaces in the capital, and the balance between civil liberties and protective measures. Beckstrom’s death is a stark reminder of the stakes involved in voluntary military service and the continuing need for vigilance and comprehensive security protocols.
