The White House has issued a striking warning in its latest National Security Strategy, suggesting that Europe may become "unrecognizable in 20 years or less" due to large-scale migration. The report emphasizes that these demographic shifts could challenge the reliability of U.S. allies in the region.
The 33-page document, released Thursday, notes that if current trends persist, the continent faces the possibility of "civilizational erasure." Mass migration has been a contentious political issue across Europe for more than a decade, driven by successive waves of arrivals from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.
"It is unclear whether some European nations will maintain the economic and military strength needed to remain dependable allies," the report states. "Many countries continue along their current trajectory. We aim for Europe to preserve its European identity, regain civilizational confidence, and move away from stifling regulatory approaches."
The national security plan identifies migration policies that are "reshaping the continent and generating tension," along with declining birth rates and erosion of national identity. The report warns that these trends could affect NATO and European security, potentially resulting in some member states becoming "majority non-European," which may weaken deterrence capabilities and complicate U.S. transatlantic strategy.
"In the long run, it is plausible that within a few decades, certain NATO countries may become majority non-European," the document states. "This raises questions about how these nations will perceive their global role and their alliance with the United States compared to the original NATO signatories."
The report also highlights Europes economic decline, noting a drop from a 25% share of global GDP in 1990 to 14% today, attributed in part to restrictive regulations. However, it stresses that the demographic and civilizational concerns are more urgent.
Factors driving this trajectory include migration policies, political suppression, declining birth rates, censorship, and the loss of national identity. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Europes immigration policies, warning that without significant changes, the continents future is at risk.
The White House maintains that unchecked migration and difficulties with migrant integration are concerns not only for the U.S. but for Europeans themselves. Open border policies, the administration argues, have contributed to rising crime and strained social welfare systems.
The report references data showing high costs associated with asylum and illegal migration in countries such as the Netherlands and France, as well as disproportionate shares of violent crime linked to non-Western migrants in Denmark and Germany. It also cites terror attacks across Europe carried out by migrants.
The document, which includes a foreword by Trump describing it as a "roadmap to ensure America remains the greatest nation," is part of broader national security goals. It outlines plans to reinforce the Monroe Doctrine and introduces a "Trump Corollary" aimed at strengthening U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere and countering foreign adversaries.
"Reasserting the Monroe Doctrine will help restore American leadership and protect national interests in the Western Hemisphere," the report states, describing the corollary as a strategic extension of long-standing U.S. foreign policy.
