Archaeologists Discover Neglected Staircase Leading to 'Forgotten Pompeii'

Researchers have uncovered a previously overlooked staircase that may have connected to a luxurious tower in ancient Pompeii, offering a new glimpse into the city's upper-class architecture and lifestyle.

By examining surviving structures, the team created detailed digital reconstructions. Observing features such as disconnected staircases and truncated support beams, they designed virtual models of architectural elements that likely existed in the past. According to the researchers, the staircase probably led to a multi-story tower, allowing affluent residents to enjoy views of the city, the Bay of Naples, and the night sky.

It is believed that the House of Thiasus may have contained a 40-foot tower with several floors. The lower interior was modestly furnished, the team explained, in contrast with the grand external staircase that ascended to the upper level, hinting at a more refined and ceremonial living space above.

The findings are highlighted in a recent journal, where 3D modeling was used to recreate what the upper floors of these buildings might have looked like. The researchers noted that these reconstructions are crucial for understanding daily life in ancient Pompeii. By assembling the data into a 3D digital model, we can create hypothetical reconstructions that reveal the experiences, spaces, and society of the time, they wrote.

While Pompeii is renowned for what remains after the catastrophic eruption, this digital method allows archaeologists to explore what has been lost. Excavation-based research provides invaluable insights into preserved areas and the tragic eruption, explained Zuchtriegal. Complementary non-invasive approaches, including virtual reconstructions of vanished structures, expand our understanding of the site.
