F.I.R.S.T. School secures two grants to enhance STEM education

F.I.R.S.T. School has been selected to receive two $5,000 grants aimed at advancing STEM education, according to a statement from the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center. The grants are part of the Ohio STEM Learning Network Classroom Grant Program, funded by Battelles philanthropic efforts. This year, a total of 194 grants were distributed to support lasting STEM-focused educational projects.
F.I.R.S.T. School staff involved include Principal Vanessa Wagner, and teachers Vivian Brownlow, Chelsi Lohr, Heather McClain, Rhonda Loughman, and Chris Jones.
Wearable Technology for Future Designers
Vivian Brownlow, a teacher at F.I.R.S.T. School, was awarded a grant for her project, "Wearable Tech for Future Designers." The initiative integrates fashion, engineering, and coding for multiple grade levels. Students will design and construct fashion items that light up using e-thread, sewable fabrics, and LED lights, culminating in a "Light Up the Runway" showcase.
Brownlow commented, This is my second year receiving an OSLN Classroom Grant. It allows me to connect STEM with fashion, making abstract concepts approachable. The project fosters creativity, experimentation, and confidence, showing students how design, math, and technology intersect. By completing this project, they can envision themselves as future innovators in fashion design and wearable technology.
Sustainable Systems Lab
Chris Jones received the other grant for his project, "Sustainable Systems Lab." The program offers students an immersive, interdisciplinary experience focused on real-world sustainability challenges. Utilizing smart kitssuch as hydroponics, solar energy, and a climate action kitstudents design, build, and operate integrated environmental systems.
Jones stated, The Sustainable Systems Lab moves learning beyond textbooks. Students gain hands-on experience with smart solar technology, hydroponics, and climate data, preparing them to become the next generation of engineers and problem-solvers addressing sustainability.
The lab also includes a smart soldering kit to teach foundational electrical engineering and circuit design skills. The project emphasizes systems thinking, problem-solving, and STEM career readiness, encouraging students to develop innovative solutions for food security and climate change within their classroom.
Teacher Heather McClain added, Students engage with abstract concepts in a hands-on way, learning critical life skills, collaborative problem-solving, and how to leverage their strengths to tackle complex challenges.
Overall, 165 public schools, including F.I.R.S.T., were recognized, impacting students across 130 Ohio school districts in 68 counties.
