A recent investigation published in the Journal of Marketing Research confirms what many Italians have long observed: specific hand gestures can make individuals appear more capable and persuasive.

For marketers, a crucial insight is that the same content can be far more compelling depending on how it is presented, stated Mi Zhou, co-author of the study and a digital marketing researcher at the University of British Columbia.

Zhou and her team analyzed 2,184 TED Talks using artificial intelligence and automated video assessment. They examined hundreds of thousands of hand movement clips, correlated them with audience engagement data, and asked participants to evaluate speakers and products in videos featuring different gestures.

The study demonstrated that hand gestures can significantly enhance impact, though not all gestures are equally effective. The researchers categorized gestures into types such as illustrators and highlighters.

Illustrators are gestures that visually represent the subject being discussed, like indicating size or shape. These gestures had the strongest effect, improving audience comprehension and making speakers seem more knowledgeable.

Highlighters, which involve physically pointing out or emphasizing something verbally mentioned, along with random gestures, showed minimal influence.

Illustrators enhance understanding because the information is conveyed both visually and verbally, Zhou explained. When a speaker visually demonstrates their points, the audience perceives greater expertise and clarity.

This research represents the first large-scale study of hand gestures, made possible through advances in AI. Its findings may be particularly useful for marketers, influencers, and anyone seeking to communicate persuasively.

Many hand movements are habitual and lack intention, Zhou noted. However, by becoming mindful of how gestures affect perception, people can significantly increase their impact.
