The Murdoch family's internal conflicts continue to unfold as tensions rise, particularly after a contentious legal battle. With key figures like Elisabeth and James excluded from the family business, and Rupert's decision to name Lachlan as sole heir, the Murdoch dynasty faces a fractured future despite corporate success.
Christmas is often seen as a time for family reunions, yet for the Murdoch family, such occasions have been few and far between. With relatives spread across the globe, it is rare for the family to come together for a holiday. In 2008, biographer Michael Wolff noted that the Murdoch family spent Christmas aboard a fleet of private yachts, an unusual instance of a family gathering. However, in recent years, family time has largely been reduced to communications between Rupert Murdoch, the long-standing media mogul, and his daughter, Elisabeth Murdoch. Although Elisabeth could have invited her father to celebrate at her lavishly renovated Cotswolds estate this year, tensions within the family, especially following a contentious legal battle in Nevada, have created rifts, making a traditional Christmas gathering unlikely. Elisabeth, along with two of her siblings, was excluded from the Murdoch family business, which has further strained relationships within the family.
The Exclusion of Elisabeth, James, and Prudence
Elisabeth Murdoch, Ruperts eldest daughter from his second marriage, co-founded and now chairs the production company Sister, which is behind successful television series such as Black Doves, The Split, and This Is Going to Hurt. Described by friends as intelligent, generous, and hardworking, Elisabeths family relationships have been put to the test this year. Despite her considerable fortune, which she shares with her siblings, James and Prudence, who are each worth around a billion dollars, money has done little to mend the rupture within the family. The Murdoch family has long defied conventional family norms, a dynamic which inspired the TV show Succession. However, the schism within the family now appears permanent, with some insiders commenting that the drama is far from overmuch like the storyline of the series, which ended too soon. In reality, the tensions continue to unfold.
James Murdochs Irreconcilable Rift
James Murdochs relationship with his father, Rupert, and his brother, Lachlan, now appears to be beyond repair. Earlier this year, James publicly criticized Rupert, calling him a "misogynist" and describing his conduct during legal proceedings as "twisted." Ruperts decision to formally remove James, Elisabeth, and Prudence from key positions within Fox Corp and News Corp, citing concerns over a potential liberal shift in the companies following his death, sparked significant resentment. As a result, Lachlan Murdoch has been confirmed as the sole heir to the Murdoch empire. Initially, a court ruling had sided against Rupert in a case involving the 1999 trust set up after his divorce from Anna Murdoch. However, a settlement was ultimately reached where James, Elisabeth, and Prudence sold their shares and agreed not to acquire equity in the future. Biographer Claire Atkinson described this outcome as a sad conclusion, emphasizing the finality of the family divide. Lachlan, on the other hand, framed the resolution as "good news for investors" and emphasized that it provided clarity for the company's corporate strategy.
Lachlan Murdochs Corporate Approach
Lachlan Murdoch, CEO of Fox Corp since 2019, has placed greater emphasis on business operations than on politics. Under his leadership, Fox News has maintained strong prime-time ratings, generating record advertising revenue. The ad-supported streaming platform Tubi has experienced rapid growth and profitability, while the company has also pursued new digital ventures, including a potential investment in TikTok. Despite Rupert's ongoing involvement at 94 years old, remaining mentally sharp and still influential, Lachlan's approach marks a departure from his fathers more traditional mix of journalism and political influence. Professor Rodney Benson of NYU notes that although Rupert remains present, the full effects of Lachlans approach will likely become more apparent over time.
Family Dynamics and Long-Term Implications
Despite Fox Corp's corporate success, the Murdochs remain deeply divided, according to investigative journalist Paddy Manning. Lachlan works closely with Rupert but remains estranged from his elder siblings. The family trust, originally designed to ensure equal inheritance among Ruperts children, ended up being contested in a Nevada courtroom, resulting in the alienation of three of Ruperts six children. Anna Murdoch, mother of Lachlan, James, and Elisabeth, had predicted such tensions decades ago. Her 1980s novel Family Business explored sibling rivalry, parental influence, and the consequences of power strugglesissues that have now become painfully real for the Murdoch family.
Looking Ahead
Elisabeth and Prudence are reportedly focusing on moving forward, keeping in mind their fathers advancing age. However, reconciliation may take years, if it occurs at all. Lachlan continues to enjoy strong personal and professional support, but the shadows of Ruperts legacy and the unresolved divisions within the family continue to loom large. The Murdoch saga highlights the complex intersection of managing a media empire, navigating personal ambitions, and balancing familial loyalty. For investors and observers, the ongoing family drama offers a rare insight into the high-stakes world where private lives and corporate power collide.
