This weekend marks the decisive stretch of the Group of Five season, with five league titles on the line and major implications for the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. With a guaranteed playoff berth for one G5 champion and the possibility of a second depending on results elsewhere every matchup carries extra weight.
Conference USA: Kennesaw State vs. Jacksonville State
Kennesaw State, projected for only a handful of wins before the season, enters the title game as a road favorite after surging to nine victories. Their earlier loss to Jacksonville State came despite outgaining the Gamecocks by a wide margin but suffering a rash of turnovers deep in scoring territory. Jacksonville State, however, holds stronger efficiency numbers on both sides of the ball and continues to lean on a potent run game led by quarterback Caden Creel and national rushing leader Cam Cook. With both teams graded closely, this contest projects as essentially even.
Sun Belt: Troy vs. No. 25 James Madison
James Madison is widely expected to handle Troy and reinforce its case for a CFP spot. The line has swelled past three touchdowns, reflecting the Dukes dominance at home and their history of covering large spreads. Troys offense ranks near the bottom of the conference, and a blowout loss to Old Dominion one of the few Sun Belt teams near JMUs level adds to the concerns. Rather than taking a side in a lopsided number, the matchup looks more favorable for an under, with JMU likely controlling the game defensively.
American Athletic Conference: No. 24 North Texas vs. No. 20 Tulane
With the committee ranking North Texas, the AAC championship becomes a clear winner-take-all scenario for the leagues playoff bid. North Texas explosive offense makes it a slight road favorite, though turnovers have caused trouble against the conferences stronger defenses. Tulane, tested by a demanding non-conference slate and boasting one of the AACs top defensive units, matches up well at home. Accounting for home field, the game rates as a near pickem, with overtime considerations making every point valuable in what should be a tight finish.
Mountain West: UNLV vs. Boise State
The Mountain West championship features two teams that needed tiebreakers to secure their spots. Boise State regains quarterback Maddux Madsen, a big factor in the line climbing from the initial number. Earlier this season, the Broncos defeated UNLV convincingly as sizeable favorites, and even if that result overstated the gap, the return of Madsen and a strong running game point toward Boise State at home, especially as the spread trends upward.
MAC: Miami (OH) vs. Western Michigan
Miami reached Detroit through a complicated tiebreaker despite losses to two teams it was tied with. The Redhawks won the regular-season meeting with Western Michigan but needed a late rally and no longer have quarterback Dequan Finn, who led both touchdowns in that matchup. Freshman Thomas Gotkowski has filled in capably, but the competition level limits the sample. Western Michigan owns the MACs best offensive success rate and one of its strongest defenses, supporting their position as favorites. With quarterback Broc Lowry and Jalen Buckley anchoring the offense, the Mustangs hold a statistical edge in the title game.
