Despite ongoing struggles with injuries and defensive weaknesses, the Buffalo Bills' defense has shown resilience in key moments. Coach Sean McDermott praises their ability to step up when the game is on the line, securing critical turnovers and stops to help the team stay in playoff contention.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. Whether they like it or not, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has come to terms with the fact that his team's injury-plagued and patched-up defense will have to manage through the remainder of the season, including a potential playoff run. McDermott, however, is not lowering his expectations. Instead, he has adopted a glass-half-full mentality, standing by a defense often criticized for its weaknesses rather than being praised for its resilience.

For instance, McDermott recently reflected on defensive coordinator Bobby Babich's use of the word "disgusting" to describe Buffalo's season-high 246 rushing yards allowed in their 35-31 victory over New England. While acknowledging that the run defense has been a persistent issue, McDermott highlighted how the defense steps up when the game is on the line, emphasizing the moments when they excel in clutch situations.

"It's about what you do when the moments are the brightest," McDermott explained. "I know you want to focus on the negative, but Ill stay focused on both sides because thats the perspective I need to have to correct things."

In Buffalo's 23-20 victory over Cleveland on Sunday, both the positive and negative aspects of the defense were on full display. Despite allowing 160 rushing yards marking the seventh time this season theyve given up 150 or more yards on the ground the defense made key stops when it mattered most. They intercepted the ball twice, forced the Browns to settle for field goals twice inside the red zone, and stopped them on downs with a 14-yard sack by Greg Rousseau at Clevelands 30-yard line with 5:02 left on the clock. When Buffalo's offense struggled in the second half, gaining just 62 yards and three points, the defense sealed the win by forcing Cleveland to punt from their own 1-yard line with 1:49 remaining.

This type of performance has been a recurring theme throughout the season. Despite the Bills entering Week 15 ranked 31st against the run, 27th on third downs, and 16th in points allowed (almost 23 points per game), their second-half numbers have been notably stronger. Buffalo ranks tied for fourth in the NFL, allowing an average of only 9 points per game in the second half. Of their 20 takeaways this season, 12 have come after halftime. This defensive effort has played a crucial role in helping the Bills (11-4) become the fifth team in NFL history to secure 11 wins in six or more consecutive seasons. They remain in contention for a sixth straight AFC East title, trailing New England (12-3), and are in a favorable position to clinch a seventh consecutive playoff berth, needing only a loss by Houston or Indianapolis to secure it.

Injuries have been a challenge, with key players such as edge rushers Michael Hoecht and Landon Jackson, as well as starting safety Taylor Rapp, all currently on injured reserve. However, starting tackle Ed Oliver is expected to return after missing several games due to a torn left bicep since Week 8. A lingering question for the Bills is whether their defense can withstand the pressure of the postseason or if they will falter as they have in previous years. Over the last five seasons, including two AFC Championship appearances, Buffalo has allowed an average of 33 points, 426 yards, and 150 rushing yards per game in playoff eliminations.

"Do we need to be more consistent? Yes," McDermott said on Sunday after the Cleveland game. "You can't allow a team to do what they did, but we also have to focus on the positivesthe takeaways and the adjustments made by the staff, particularly in the fourth quarter. The guys stepped up and made the plays they needed to make."

What's Working:

  • A Running Game Led by James Cook: Cook rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, marking his ninth 100-yard game of the season, which ties him with Thurman Thomas for second place in franchise history.

What Needs Improvement:

  • Third-Down Efficiency: The Bills converted just 2 of 8 third-down attempts against Cleveland, their second-worst performance of the season.
  • Greg Rousseau: Rousseau had a career-high 2.5 sacks and 7 quarterback hits in the victory over Cleveland.
  • Wide Receiver Keon Coleman: The second-round pick in the 2024 draft was a healthy scratch for the third time this season, also serving a one-game suspension for being late to a team meeting.
  • Linebacker Shaq Thompson: Thompson did not return after suffering a neck injury during the game.
  • Safety Jordan Poyer: Poyer sustained a hamstring injury in the second half of the game.
  • Quarterback Josh Allen: Allen finished the game despite injuring his right foot late in the second quarter.

24 The number of rushing touchdowns the Bills defense has allowed this season, which is the second-most in team history and just two shy of tying the franchise record set in a 14-game season in 1972.

Looking ahead, Buffalo will host the defending Super Bowl champions and two-time NFC East champions, the Philadelphia Eagles (10-5), on Sunday.
