Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota was forced to exit Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles after injuring his right hand. Mariota, who was starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, was replaced by Josh Johnson after sustaining a hit in the third quarter.
LANDOVER, Md. Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota, who was starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, was forced to leave Saturday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to an injury to his right hand. Mariota was replaced by third-string quarterback Josh Johnson early in the third quarter.
After successfully leading the team through the first drive of the second half, Mariota sustained a hit that left him visibly shaken. He was quickly escorted to the blue medical tent on the Commanders' sideline for evaluation. Later, Mariota walked toward the locker room, signaling that he was not able to continue in the game. The team confirmed that Mariota was evaluated for a concussion and was cleared, but his return remained uncertain due to the hand injury.
At the time of his departure, Mariota had completed 7 of 14 passes for 95 yards, with the Commanders holding a 10-7 lead. Following Mariota's exit, the Eagles responded with a long 17-play, 83-yard drive, which resulted in a touchdown that put them ahead 14-10.
This was Mariota's eighth start of the season, taking over for Daniels, who the team decided to keep sidelined for the rest of the year. Johnson, who had seen limited action earlier this season, had yet to throw a pass in the game prior to Mariotas injury.
