The spouse of a Virginia high school football coach who vanished shortly before being sought on charges related to child sexual abuse material and solicitation of a minor is appealing to him to "face the allegations by defending yourself in court," as he has now been missing for two weeks.
Travis Turner, 46, from Appalachia, Virginia, was last seen on November 20, according to the Virginia State Police. He faces multiple felony charges, including five counts of possessing child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor. Authorities have classified the Union High School football coach as a fugitive.
Turner was reportedly last observed by family members entering nearby woods while carrying a firearm. "Although the familys last contact with Travis raises serious concern for his well-being, they remain hopeful he will be found and given the chance to defend himself in court," the family stated through his wife's attorney on Wednesday.
The family has been cooperating fully with law enforcement, including allowing multiple searches of their home and properties as part of the effort to locate Turner. His vehicle, keys, wallet, daily medications, and vision aids were all left at home.
When Turner did not return that evening, his wife promptly reported him missing to the Virginia State Police the following day. "Criminal charges were not filed against Travis until days after he failed to come home," the family clarified. "He was not considered a fugitive at the time of his disappearance. His wife sought assistance to find him, not help him evade authorities."
His wife and children are reportedly distressed and have urged Turner to return. "Do not leave your family to face this alone," the familys statement read. "They love and miss you and want you to know they are your support."
The U.S. Marshals Service has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to Turners capture, warning that he "may be armed" in their official wanted notice.
Turner is a physical education teacher and head football coach at Union High School in Wise County. Despite his absence, the football team has advanced to the Virginia state semifinals, maintaining an undefeated 13-0 season.
Wise County Public Schools confirmed they are aware of the charges and that Turner remains on administrative leave. "He is not allowed on school property or to have contact with students," the school district said, adding that they will continue to cooperate with law enforcement throughout the investigation.
Author's Commentary: The Ongoing Case of Travis Turner
Two weeks have passed since Travis Turner, a Virginia high school football coach, went missing just before facing serious criminal charges. The situation has escalated from a missing person case to a law enforcement manhunt, with Turner now classified as a fugitive by the Virginia State Police.
Authorities report that Turner was last seen entering nearby woods with a firearm, raising concerns about his safety and the potential risk to others. His personal items, including vehicle, keys, and daily medications, were left behind, suggesting a sudden departure.
The family continues to appeal publicly for Turner to return and address the charges in court, emphasizing that their support remains with him despite the gravity of the allegations. Meanwhile, the U.S. Marshals Service has issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to his capture and warned that he may be armed.
Union High School and Wise County Public Schools have confirmed Turner remains on administrative leave and barred from school property, while his football team continues an undefeated season. The case highlights the challenges authorities face balancing public safety, the rights of the accused, and family concerns during an ongoing criminal investigation.
