With over half of the NBA teams having played 21 or more games, the 2025-26 season is officially one-quarter complete. It's the perfect time to evaluate each Eastern Conference team based on performance relative to expectations.
For instance, a struggling Washington Wizards squad (3-17) earns a decent grade because losses were anticipated, whereas a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers (13-9) may underperform relative to expectations. The Eastern Conference features a tightly packed leaderboard: Detroit Pistons (17-4) lead, followed by seven teams with 12-15 wins, including the expected frontrunners Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks (13-7).
No Eastern team has yet demonstrated the capability to challenge a Western Conference champion, but the playoff picture is unusually open. Boston Celtics (12-9) could be contenders if Jayson Tatum returns, while Miami Heat (14-7), Toronto Raptors (15-7), Orlando Magic (13-8), Atlanta Hawks (13-9), and Philadelphia 76ers (11-9) all have potential first-round playoff success. Meanwhile, the Pistons may consider a trade for Lauri Markkanen to push toward championship contention.
Team Reviews
Atlanta Hawks
1Q MVP: Jalen Johnson (23-10-7, 54/41/79)
Best lineup: Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Zaccharie Risacher, Kristaps Porziis (+25 in 122 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Toronto, 109-97
The Hawks are 11-6 without Trae Young, boasting a +4.5 net rating and top-six defense since Halloween. Johnson is excelling, Alexander-Walker is filling in admirably, and Porziis' health remains crucial. Youngs return could make them stronger offensively while retaining defensive prowess.
Boston Celtics
1Q MVP: Jaylen Brown (29-6-5, 50/35/77)
Best lineup: Brown, Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta (+40 in 53 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Brooklyn, 113-105
Boston has managed well despite Tatums Achilles injury. Brown has thrived as the primary option, though the defense struggles and a rim protector is needed. The offense is solid, even if shooting consistency is lacking.
Brooklyn Nets
1Q MVP: Michael Porter Jr. (25-7-3, 49/38/82)
Best lineup: Porter, Cam Thomas, Terrance Mann, Tyrese Martin, Nic Claxton (+8 in 19 minutes)
Worst loss: at Charlotte, 136-117
Brooklyn's rookie-heavy roster has struggled, particularly against stronger teams. Porter Jr. is emerging as a reliable leader. The team relies on high-volume 3-point shooting and has managed a key win over Washington.
Charlotte Hornets
1Q MVP: Kon Knueppel (18-6-3, 47/42/90)
Best lineup: Knueppel, LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller, Ryan Kalkbrenner (+2 in 39 minutes)
Worst loss: at Pacers, 127-118
Knueppel and Kalkbrenner have been strong draft picks. LaMelo Balls impact is inconsistent, and team chemistry under coach Charles Lee is still forming. Talent exists but cohesion is uncertain.
Chicago Bulls
1Q MVP: Josh Giddey (21-10-9, 47/40/74)
Best lineup: Giddey, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, Matas Buzelis, Nikola Vuevi (+16 in 26 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Miami, 143-107
The Bulls showed early promise, especially Giddey and Vuevi, but initial success has waned. The team needs to regain its competitive edge from the season's start.
Cleveland Cavaliers
1Q MVP: Donovan Mitchell (31-5-6, 51/39/83)
Best lineup: Mitchell, Darius Garland, De'Andre Hunter, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen (+18 in 43 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Toronto, 126-113
Health issues for Garland have limited the Cavaliers' potential. Mitchell continues to perform at an elite level, while Mobley remains talented but not yet transformative.
Detroit Pistons
1Q MVP: Cade Cunningham (28-7-9, 46/30/82)
Best lineup: Cunningham, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson, Tobias Harris, Jalen Duren (+33 in 113 minutes)
Worst loss: at Boston, 117-114
Detroit has exceeded expectations, with Cunningham emerging as an MVP candidate. The team has navigated absences of key players while showing consistent performance.
Indiana Pacers
1Q MVP: Pascal Siakam (24-7-4, 48/33/67)
Best lineup: Siakam, Aaron Nesmith, Jarace Walker, Quenton Jackson, Isaiah Jackson (+20 in 35 minutes)
Worst loss: at Utah, 152-128
Pacers have struggled, dealing with injuries and roster turnover. Siakam is the consistent performer amid inconsistency, and development of young talent remains key.
Miami Heat
1Q MVP: Norman Powell (25-3-4, 51/46/88)
Best lineup: Powell, Davion Mitchell, Pelle Larsson, Andrew Wiggins, Bam Adebayo (+33 in 48 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Cleveland, 130-116
Miami plays with energy and pace. Powell stands out, and contributions from young players like Pelle Larson have strengthened the roster. Injury recovery, like Tyler Herros return, has integrated smoothly.
Milwaukee Bucks
1Q MVP: Giannis Antetokounmpo (31-11-6, 64/44/63)
Best lineup: Antetokounmpo, Ryan Rollins, AJ Green, Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner (+50 in 59 minutes)
Worst loss: at Washington, 129-126
The Bucks performance is heavily Giannis-dependent: dominant with him on the floor, struggling without him. Defense remains a concern despite Turner's addition.
New York Knicks
1Q MVP: Jalen Brunson (28-3-7, 47/36/86)
Best lineup: Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns (+22 in 40 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Orlando, 124-107
The Knicks combine elite offense with improving defense. Brunson and Towns are offensive cornerstones, but defensive vulnerabilities remain a challenge.
Orlando Magic
1Q MVP: Franz Wagner (23-6-4, 48/34/83)
Best lineup: Wagner, Jalen Suggs, Desmond Bane, Paolo Banchero, Wendell Carter Jr. (+45 in 101 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Chicago, 110-98
Orlando recovered after a slow start, excelling on both offense and defense. Young stars Wagner and Suggs drive a potent on-court pairing.
Philadelphia 76ers
1Q MVP: Tyrese Maxey (33-5-8, 47/39/88)
Best lineup: Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond (+22 in 39 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Orlando, 144-103
The 76ers' young backcourt has been strong, but overall record is disappointing due to limited appearances from Embiid and George. Health and consistency remain concerns.
Toronto Raptors
1Q MVP: Scottie Barnes (20-8-5, 52/42/85)
Best lineup: Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Brandon Ingram, Jakob Poeltl (+18 in 166 minutes)
Worst loss: at Charlotte, 118-111
Toronto has exceeded expectations, fueled by Barnes and Ingrams high-level play. Improved defense and opponent shooting struggles have contributed to success.
Washington Wizards
1Q MVP: Sarr CJ McCollum Tre Johnson Kyshawn George Khris Middleton (+22 in 31 minutes)
Worst loss: vs. Brooklyn, 129-106
The Wizards are among the leagues worst offensively and defensively, aiming to secure another high draft pick. Despite the struggles, young talent shows promise for the future.
Eastern Conference 2025-26 Season: Midpoint Evaluation
As the first quarter of the 2025-26 NBA season reaches its conclusion, we can begin to draw clearer conclusions about the state of the Eastern Conference. Teams like the Detroit Pistons have exceeded expectations, while others, such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, have fallen short. Despite this, the Eastern Conference remains one of the more intriguing and unpredictable areas of the league, with plenty of playoff contenders yet to separate themselves from the pack.
The Detroit Pistons, currently leading the conference with a 17-4 record, have emerged as a major surprise. Cade Cunningham is playing at an MVP-caliber level, and the team has been consistently strong despite key player absences. On the other hand, the Cleveland Cavaliers (13-9) have underperformed considering their roster's potential, particularly with injuries limiting their effectiveness. The team's reliance on Donovan Mitchell's scoring, while impressive, has not been enough to put them among the elite teams in the East.
Meanwhile, teams like the Boston Celtics (12-9), Miami Heat (14-7), and New York Knicks (13-7) have shown flashes of their potential, but key injuries and defensive struggles remain a concern. The Celtics, in particular, could rise to prominence if Jayson Tatum returns healthy. The Miami Heat have been a well-balanced team, and the Knicks' offensive firepower, led by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, could take them deep into the postseason.
However, it is clear that no Eastern Conference team at this point appears to have the firepower to challenge the reigning Western Conference champions. With playoff spots still up for grabs, the competition in the East is likely to tighten as the season progresses. Teams with potential, such as the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors, will be looking to make a push, while squads like the Washington Wizards will continue their rebuilding efforts.
In conclusion, the Eastern Conference is still wide open. While some teams have exceeded expectations, others are still struggling to find their rhythm. The playoff picture is far from decided, and much can change in the second quarter of the season. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining which teams can turn their fortunes around and make a real push for the playoffs.
