Kansas State coach Chris Klieman steps down as Wildcats reportedly prepare to bring in Texas A&M OC Collin Klein as his successor

Kansas State University announced that Chris Klieman, head coach of the Wildcats, has decided to retire after more than ten years leading college football teams. Klieman, 58, made the decision after careful consideration with his family, citing personal health and a desire to spend more time with his wife Rhonda and their three children.

During his tenure at Kansas State, Klieman compiled a 54-34 record, including a standout 10-4 season in 2022 when the Wildcats captured the Big 12 Championship. Kansas State achieved at least eight wins in five of his seven seasons, although the team finished 6-6 in 2025. The season included early losses to Iowa State and back-to-back defeats against Army and Arizona, followed by a late-season rally to reach .500 before ending with a 51-47 loss to Utah, a game Klieman described as one of the greatest efforts Ive been a part of as a coach.

Klieman arrived at Kansas State after Bill Snyders second retirement in 2018, joining from North Dakota State where he led the Bison to four FCS national titles in five years, including a perfect 15-0 season in 2018.

Reports indicate that former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, currently Texas A&Ms offensive coordinator, is poised to succeed Klieman. Klein, 36, played at K-State from 2010-2012, earning third place in the 2012 Heisman Trophy voting. He accumulated nearly 2,500 passing yards and 900 rushing yards with 37 total touchdowns as a senior, and earlier rushed for 1,141 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior.

Klein spent seven seasons on the Kansas State coaching staff, rising from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in 2022, before joining Texas A&M in 2024. In his two seasons with the Aggies, Texas A&M has averaged over 36 points per game and 6.6 yards per play, with quarterback Marcel Reed accounting for 31 total touchdowns in 2025.

Reflecting on his retirement, Klieman said, "I absolutely love coaching the game of football and developing players into young men, but now is the time to step away. K-State will always be a special part of our family's story, and we will forever be Wildcats."

Analysis: End of an Era at Kansas State

Chris Klieman’s retirement marks a significant transition for Kansas State University football. Over seven seasons, he led the Wildcats to a 54-34 record, highlighted by a Big 12 Championship in 2022 and multiple eight-win campaigns. His leadership sustained competitiveness following Bill Snyder’s legendary tenure.

Klieman’s decision, driven by personal health and family priorities, underscores the challenges coaches face balancing career demands with personal life. His departure opens the door for Collin Klein, a former K-State quarterback and rising offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, to continue the program’s legacy with familiarity and local roots.

Looking ahead, the program faces both opportunity and uncertainty. Klein brings an innovative offensive approach, evidenced by Texas A&M’s strong scoring output, but he will inherit the task of maintaining consistency while fostering team culture. K-State fans can anticipate a blend of continuity and new energy under his leadership.
