LONDON Lego is set to release a life-size replica of the iconic World Cup trophy, constructed from 2,842 Lego bricks. The Danish toy company revealed the collaboration with FIFA on Wednesday, introducing its first-ever World Cup-themed collection, scheduled for launch next year.
The Lego version mirrors the original trophy, first showcased at the 1974 World Cup, standing at an identical 36.8 centimeters (14 inches) tall. Unlike the original, which is crafted from 18-carat gold and green malachite and weighs 6.175 kilograms (13.6 pounds), the Lego edition is made entirely of plastic, making it much lighter and easier to handle.
Priced at $200, the set will be available in March and includes a hidden scene accessible via a pull-out section in the upper globe, according to Lego. The authentic trophy remains in FIFAs Zurich headquarters.
The upcoming mens World Cup, featuring 48 teams for the first time and co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is scheduled to kick off on June 11.
