Michael Bell from Staunton named teacher of the year in school division

Michael Bell has been officially named the Teacher of the Year for Staunton City Schools. Bell, who graduated from Staunton City Schools in 2001, pursued higher education at Concord University before beginning his career in education. His initial role was as an instructional assistant at Shelburne Middle School. Over time, he advanced to become a physical education teacher at the same school, a position he maintained for 15 years.

In 2022, Bell transitioned to Staunton High School, where he assumed the role of head football coach. He currently holds dual responsibilities as the head coach for both varsity football and wrestling at Staunton High School. The school division noted that Bell "combines high expectations with strong, supportive relationships, creating a safe and motivating environment for students." His 19 years of professional experience have established him as a trusted advisor for students. Colleagues describe him as a committed leader who supports students in academics, athletics, and personal development.

During the school board meeting on December 15, the division also acknowledged the support staff of the year. Bell has now become a candidate for the Region V Teacher of the Year award, competing with educators from 20 other school divisions located in the Valley and areas east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The regional winner will move forward as a finalist for the Virginia Teacher of the Year award, the highest recognition for public school teachers in the state.

In addition to Bell's recognition, Shawna Armstrong from Bessie Weller Elementary School was named the 20252026 Staunton City Schools Division Support Staff Person of the Year. Armstrong, who serves as the schools bookkeeper, is described as "a cornerstone of school operations," and her organizational skills, care, and leadership ensure smooth daily operations. Principal Sandra McGrath emphasized Armstrongs importance, stating, "She is the glue that holds things together."

Staunton Superintendent Eric Irizarry expressed gratitude for the contributions of these educators and support staff, highlighting, "Their dedication to students, families, and each other strengthens the foundation of our school community. We are fortunate to have such expertise, compassion, and integrity within the SCS family."
