One-way traffic on the Isle of Wight has ended after a key water main upgrade along Horsebridge Hill. The project replaced aging pipes, improving water supply reliability while restoring normal traffic flow and easing disruptions for local drivers.
The traffic situation on the Isle of Wight has returned to normal following the completion of an essential water main upgrade that had required a temporary one-way system. The work was concentrated along Horsebridge Hill, a key section of the A3020 route connecting Cowes and Newport, and focused on replacing aging water infrastructure that posed risks to the local supply.
Project Overview
The upgrade began on January 26th and involved installing a 500-meter (1,640 feet) long plastic water pipe beneath Horsebridge Hill. The replacement addressed the previous water main, which had been considered outdated and susceptible to bursts, leaks, and water discoloration. The project was a part of a broader effort to modernize the island’s water network and secure the reliability of the supply for residents.
Impact on Traffic
During the construction period, the A3020 corridor was restricted to a one-way traffic system to allow safe installation of the new pipe. The one-way system was planned to remain until April 17th but was lifted earlier than anticipated. With the completion of the works, normal traffic flow resumed, alleviating the detours and delays that had affected daily routines for drivers on the island.
Benefits of the Upgrade
- Reduced risk of water main bursts and leaks.
- Improved stability of the water supply for residents.
- Minimized chances of water discoloration.
- Ensured a more reliable flow of essential water across the community.
Community Response
Although the upgrade was completed ahead of schedule, many residents experienced inconvenience and expressed frustration over the road closure and traffic diversions. The detours caused delays and required adjustments to daily routines. However, the early reopening of the route has begun to ease these concerns and restore normalcy for drivers.
Project Collaboration
The water main replacement was conducted by Southern Water in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads. The initiative represents a long-term investment in the island’s infrastructure, aiming to provide a secure and efficient water supply system for local communities.
