The Green Bay Packers are facing a sudden defensive tackle dilemma after Devonte Wyatt, who had become the key interior lineman following TJ Slatons departure in free agency and Kenny Clarks trade to Dallas, was sidelined for the season with a lower-leg fracture. While external signings remain a future possibility, the organization is leaning on internal talent to fill the gap.
Theres a lot to figure out, but we believe in the players currently on the roster, head coach Matt LaFleur said. Getting Karl Brooks back would be great, and our younger players will need to take on more reps alongside Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse. Well manage it from there.
With Wyatt out, the active defensive tackle roster consists of two third-year players, Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden, and rookies Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse. James Ester and Dante Barnett remain on the practice squad. Brooks missed the game against Detroit due to an ankle injury, and his return would significantly bolster the lineup.
Before the injury, Wyatt was performing at his peak. In nine games, the fourth-year player recorded 22 pressures and four sacks. Hes certainly tough to replace, LaFleur said. Now its up to the rest of the team to elevate their performance.
After three seasons mainly as a rotational player and interior rusher, Wyatt had increased his impact this year, justifying the Packers decision to pick up his fifth-year option. His production has clearly improved, and hes been disruptive in both the run and pass game. That position takes time to develop, and he was playing the best football of his career, LaFleur noted.
The focus now shifts to the younger players. Rookie sixth-rounder Warren Brinson, previously inactive for several games, has shown promise, including recording five pressures in a single game against Minnesota. Hes earned these opportunities through his performance. Our defensive line coaches and quality control staff have done an excellent job developing him, LaFleur said.
Despite the challenge, the Packers have capable players ready to rise to the occasion. The key question is who will step up to fill the void left by Wyatts injury.
Analysis: Green Bay Packers' Defensive Tackle Dilemma After Wyatt Injury
The Green Bay Packers are facing a significant challenge following the injury to defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, who was emerging as a key force in the team's interior defensive line. His absence for the remainder of the season due to a lower-leg fracture leaves a sizable gap. With veteran players like TJ Slaton and Kenny Clark already gone, the pressure now falls on the younger talent on the roster to fill the void.
While external signings have not been ruled out, head coach Matt LaFleur remains confident in the abilities of the team's internal options. The Packers' defensive line now features third-year players Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden, along with rookies Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse. Brooks, who missed a recent game due to an ankle injury, is expected to return soon, which would provide a much-needed boost to the unit.
Wyatt's loss is particularly impactful given his exceptional performance this season, which saw him register 22 pressures and four sacks in just nine games. LaFleur emphasized that Wyatt's production in both the run and pass game made him difficult to replace, and that the rest of the team would now need to elevate their performance in his absence. Wyatt had been playing the best football of his career, justifying the Packers' decision to exercise his fifth-year option.
Rookie Warren Brinson has shown promise, including a strong performance against Minnesota where he registered five pressures in a single game. His development, along with that of the other younger players, will be critical in the coming weeks as the Packers look to maintain defensive stability. The organization's belief in its internal talent will be tested, and the next few games will reveal which players are ready to step up in Wyatt's absence.
