Penn State dismissed head coach James Franklin on October 12, and nearly two months later, the program is still searching for his successor. During that time, several major programs including LSU, Florida, Arkansas, Auburn, UCLA and Michigan State have already filled their vacancies. Meanwhile, coaches such as Matt Rhule at Nebraska, Jeff Brohm at Louisville and Curt Cignetti at Indiana have chosen to remain with their current teams by signing extensions.
As the search continues, well-known NFL figures like Mike Tomlin and Brian Daboll have begun circulating in discussions. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger shared on his podcast that Tomlin could thrive at Penn State, suggesting a fresh start might suit him and praising his recruiting ability.
Tomlin previously dismissed the idea of moving to the college ranks in 2021, firmly stating he had no interest and that no donor could write a check large enough to change his mind.
The strongest candidate for the job, however, may already be inside the program. Interim head coach Terry Smith, a ten-year assistant with a background as an NFL receiver, assumed leadership following Franklins departure. Smith has earned the support of both the roster and influential boosters, and several major donors are reportedly encouraging athletic director Pat Kraft to make his appointment permanent.
Another prominent option is Alabamas Kalen DeBoer, who recently guided the Crimson Tide to victory in the Iron Bowl and has positioned the team for a potential College Football Playoff run. Despite that success, questions remain about his long-term fit in Tuscaloosa. Some analysts believe he may consider Penn State as a strategic move before pressure builds further at Alabama.
Commentators suggest that the longer the position stays open, the greater the chance Penn State could make an unexpected move, keeping the college football world guessing.
Analysis: Penn State's Ongoing Search for a Head Coach
As Penn State continues its search for a new head coach, the prolonged vacancy has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike. Despite the dismissal of James Franklin on October 12, the program has not yet secured a replacement, while several major schools like LSU, Florida, and Arkansas have already made their hires. This delay is puzzling given the high stakes involved in recruiting and program stability.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the search is the speculation surrounding NFL figures like Mike Tomlin and Brian Daboll. Tomlin, who had previously dismissed college football, has now become a focal point of the conversation. His ability to recruit and his leadership qualities make him a strong candidate on paper. However, his repeated statements about staying in the NFL cast doubt on the feasibility of this move. Ben Roethlisberger’s recent comments, which endorse Tomlin’s potential fit at Penn State, only add fuel to the speculation, even if the coach himself remains uninterested.
On the other hand, Penn State’s interim head coach Terry Smith may already be the answer. With a decade-long coaching background and strong backing from both the team and influential boosters, Smith has proven to be a capable leader. His steady hand could be exactly what the program needs during this uncertain period. Additionally, reports indicate that athletic director Pat Kraft is under significant pressure from major donors to make Smith's appointment permanent.
Another name to consider is Kalen DeBoer from Alabama. His recent success with the Crimson Tide has turned heads, though his long-term fit at Alabama remains uncertain. Should DeBoer decide to leave, Penn State could present a more attractive opportunity for him, both in terms of career stability and future potential. His connection to the program and his track record could be a major asset for the Nittany Lions.
Ultimately, Penn State’s hiring decision will have a significant impact on the future direction of the program. The longer the search continues, the more unpredictable the outcome becomes. With key names in the mix and potential surprises on the horizon, Penn State’s next head coach could change the landscape of college football in ways that have yet to be fully understood.
