Penn State's signing day descends into chaos during coaching search

Penn States 2025 recruiting day did not unfold as expected. What was supposed to be a moment of celebration with James Franklin still leading the program instead became a chaotic scene marked by decommitments and uncertainty.

Since Franklins departure, multiple recruits have followed him, with many now heading to Virginia Tech. While Franklins influence was significant, the absence of a permanent head coach has intensified the challenges for the Nittany Lions.

Leading up to National Signing Day, Penn State reportedly held talks with BYUs head coach Kalani Sitake. However, Sitake ultimately chose to remain at BYU after key boosters expressed disapproval of a potential move. It remains unclear how his decision might have affected Penn States class.

Even before signing day, several commitments had shifted. Despite this, some successes occurred, including securing three-star quarterback Peyton Falzone, who had initially decommitted in June, and signing four-star edge rusher Jackson Ford. Still, high-profile losses included four-star safety Matt Sieg, four-star linebacker Terry Wiggins, and three-star corner Amauri Polydor, most of whom followed Franklin to Virginia Tech, with Sieg flipping to West Virginia.

Additional complications arose from early decommitments and flips, such as four-star quarterback Troy Huhn, who reopened his recruitment shortly after Franklins exit. Ultimately, Huhn chose Virginia Tech over Penn State just before signing day.

The instability surrounding the coaching search has clearly affected recruits decisions. Without Franklins steady presence, Penn State struggled to maintain momentum on the recruiting trail.

Nevertheless, interim coach Terry Smith has received praise for maintaining continuity and supporting a positive culture during a turbulent period. Calls from veteran staff to remove the interim label suggest hope that Smith can stabilize the program and guide it through these challenges.

For now, Penn States athletic department is left to assess the fallout of a class deeply impacted by the absence of its former head coach.

Commentary: The Turbulence Surrounding Penn State's 2025 Recruiting Day

Penn State's 2025 recruiting day, which was anticipated to be a hallmark of success and stability, quickly became a reflection of the program's ongoing challenges. The departure of head coach James Franklin triggered a series of decommitments, sending recruits in different directions, with many choosing to follow Franklin to Virginia Tech. The lack of a permanent head coach has added to the uncertainty, highlighting the importance of leadership during crucial recruiting periods.

As the coaching search continues, Penn State's struggles are evident in the wavering decisions of key recruits. Despite these setbacks, there were some positives, such as the successful signing of three-star quarterback Peyton Falzone and four-star edge rusher Jackson Ford. However, the program lost out on several top-tier players, including four-star safety Matt Sieg and linebacker Terry Wiggins, who chose to commit elsewhere. These losses further illustrate the impact Franklin's absence has had on the program.

The decision by BYU's Kalani Sitake to stay put after discussions with Penn State underscores the program’s current instability. With important recruits already lost and others unsure about the future direction of the team, it is clear that the Nittany Lions need a permanent head coach sooner rather than later. Interim coach Terry Smith has been praised for keeping the team’s culture intact during this turbulent period, but for Penn State to regain its recruiting momentum, the athletic department will have to move decisively to fill the head coach position.
