A rugby club in Surrey, unable to use its long-established ground after a significant soil dumping error, has been offered a last-minute chance to remain at its temporary venue.
The Elmbridge Eagles have been barred from playing at their Oaken Lane ground in Claygate since 2016, when 52,000 tonnes of soiltwice the amount intended to improve drainagewere mistakenly deposited on the site. Since then, the team has shared facilities with the Old Cranleighans rugby club in Thames Ditton. However, that arrangement was uncertain for the 2026 season.
Kevin Rudd, acting secretary of the Eagles, confirmed that Old Cranleighans have now extended an offer for the Eagles to continue using their grounds, though he noted that "there is still much to discuss." He added, "Its encouraging to have the opportunity to consider thisit could lead to a longer-term solution."
Martin Williamson, representing the Old Cranleighan Society, clarified that there was never a risk of the Eagles being forced out permanently, but acknowledged that next years arrangements were undecided. "We are undertaking significant work at our club, and we had indicated to the Eagles that the 2026 season might present challenges," he explained. Discussions over a potential 10-year agreement are ongoing.
While open to staying, Rudd noted that the Eagles are also exploring other possibilities, including locations outside the borough, as some members are seeking a "fresh start." The Oaken Lane site remains unusable, and the club faces a 12-month forfeiture notice from Elmbridge Borough Council. This notice, issued last month, requires the club to remove the soil within a year or risk losing its lease.
A council spokesperson said: "Since issuing the forfeiture notice, we have met with both Elmbridge Eagles and the governing body of Rugby League to explore ways for the club to continue offering rugby locally. We remain committed to supporting the Elmbridge Eagles Rugby Club."
Commentary: The Future of Elmbridge Eagles Rugby Club
The situation surrounding the Elmbridge Eagles rugby club highlights the ongoing challenges faced by community sports organizations. Since the soil dumping error at their Oaken Lane ground in 2016, the Eagles have been in a constant state of flux, relying on temporary arrangements and facing an uncertain future. While the recent offer from the Old Cranleighans rugby club provides a glimmer of hope, it remains to be seen whether this will evolve into a stable, long-term solution.
Kevin Rudd, the Eagles' acting secretary, expressed cautious optimism regarding the potential for an extended stay at Old Cranleighans' grounds. However, the club is aware that this is only a temporary solution, and there is still much to resolve in terms of future arrangements. As discussions for a potential 10-year agreement continue, the club is also exploring other options, which reflects the uncertainty that still surrounds their long-term plans.
What is clear is that the Eagles' situation cannot be fully resolved without addressing the issue of their Oaken Lane ground. The council's 12-month forfeiture notice requires the club to act quickly to either remove the excess soil or face losing their lease. Despite the council's reassurances of support, the clock is ticking, and the Eagles may need to make difficult decisions in the coming months.
Ultimately, the Elmbridge Eagles' story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between local sports clubs and the challenges they face in maintaining stable and secure facilities. The decisions made in the near future will determine whether the club can continue to serve its community or if its future will remain uncertain.
