The SEC Championship is set for Saturday, pitting the Georgia Bulldogs against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Meanwhile, other SEC teams are looking ahead, either hoping for a College Football Playoff spot, preparing for bowl games, or planning for the offseason. Attention is also turning to 2026, as the early signing period for high school recruits begins this week. The NCAA transfer portal officially opens on January 2, and several players are already declaring their intentions to move.
Vanderbilt University will soon lose a key player at the quarterback position. Reports from On3's Pete Nakos indicate that Drew Dickey, the Commodores quarterback, intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Dickey has been with Vanderbilt for four seasons but has seen limited action, appearing in only three games during that span. This season, he completed 1-of-2 passes for 28 yards in a 70-21 victory over Georgia State and added three rushes for 13 yards, including a touchdown. Throughout his career, Dickey has primarily served as a backup, and he is now seeking an opportunity for more playing time.
Originally a three-star recruit in the 2022 class, Dickey hails from Austin, Texas. He chose Vanderbilt over offers from Colorado State, Marshall, and Maryland.
Commentary: Drew Dickey’s Transfer Reflects a Growing Trend
The announcement that Vanderbilt quarterback Drew Dickey will enter the NCAA transfer portal highlights a broader shift in college football dynamics. Dickey, who has been with the Commodores for four seasons but has limited in-game experience, is seeking an opportunity for more playing time. This mirrors a common path for backup quarterbacks looking to showcase their skills elsewhere.
Vanderbilt will need to adjust its quarterback depth chart in the upcoming offseason, as losing a player with Dickey’s experience, even as a backup, impacts team preparation and leadership. While his statistical contribution this season was minimal, his presence in practice and familiarity with the program carried value.
For Dickey, the transfer portal opens potential opportunities at programs where he can compete for a starting role. As the early signing period for high school recruits begins and the portal officially opens in January, coaching staffs across the SEC and beyond are actively evaluating available talent. Dickey’s move underscores how player mobility is reshaping roster strategies and opportunities in college football.
