The charm of Conference Championship weekend has dwindled, with only one coach showing any interest

If you find yourself in downtown Atlanta this weekend, the excitement around the SEC title game might feel electric, even if the significance of conference championships has waned. Fans dressed in Georgia red and Alabama crimson will fill hotel lobbies and local bars, fueling the city's economy. Inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the atmosphere will rival any game all season, and the victorious team will celebrate as if it were the Super Bowl.
Winning an SEC championship is a rare opportunity, said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, one of the few who still places immense value on the conference crown. Smart has witnessed the evolution of the SEC title game firsthand, dating back to his playing days in 1992, when Alabama faced Florida at Legion Field. Through his years as a player and assistant coach, Smart watched the SEC championship grow into a de facto national title game.
Its one of the most watched games every year, Smart added. Some years, it even surpasses the national championship in viewership. I have a lot of respect for it.
However, with the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams and possibly more, few share Smarts reverence. While the SEC title remains profitable for the league and Atlanta, its relevance on the national stage has diminished. Alabama vs. Georgia is a rematch of a game played earlier this season, which Alabama won 24-21. Barring a major upset, both teams are likely to secure spots in the playoff, potentially facing each other again.
Once essential in the BCS and early CFP eras, conference championships are now closer to exhibition matches in terms of national title impact. The stakes are high but rewards are minimal. Injuries or lopsided losses can jeopardize playoff positioning without offering much prestige in return. Smart remains one of the few coaches who treats the SEC title as equally important to a CFP crown.
Winning that trophy is a testament to toughness and resilience, Smart said. Its a challenge, and the team that earns it has navigated a grueling schedule.
Despite the sentiment, the broader college football culture increasingly sees the season as a lead-up to the CFP. Even a marquee No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the Big Ten feels like a mere appetizer for the playoff. Conference titles, once central, now often function as filler, adding little to the sports narrative while complicating scheduling and playoff decisions.
Future playoff expansion could further sideline these games. A 16-team playoff starting immediately after the regular season could eliminate the need for conference championships, letting teams carry regular-season momentum directly into the postseason. Such a change would also minimize disruptions caused by coaching changes or early recruiting periods, simplifying playoff logistics and fairness.
Even last year, fan interest showed cracks. Empty sections at the SEC title game indicated that supporters were prioritizing playoff matches over conference contests. As conferences grow and schedules remain uneven, winning a conference crown no longer guarantees clarity about the best team. Imbalanced schedules, technical tiebreakers, and ranking biases all diminish the championships significance.
In short, conference championship games were designed for a different era. Now, they largely serve financial interests and tradition, with few remaining believers beyond coaches like Smart. The SEC can continue to amplify its games importance, but long-term interest in these titles is steadily declining.
Analysis: The Waning Prestige of SEC Championships
From my perspective, the SEC title game in Atlanta remains a spectacle, but its role in determining the national champion is increasingly symbolic rather than decisive. The atmosphere inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium is electric, and fans continue to support the teams enthusiastically, yet the real measure of success has shifted to the College Football Playoff.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart’s reverence for the SEC trophy is one of the few exceptions in college football. For most programs, the championship is a milestone on the path to the playoff rather than the ultimate goal. Even in high-profile matchups like Alabama vs. Georgia, the national attention focuses on potential playoff rematches rather than the conference title itself.
Looking ahead, the planned expansion of the playoff to 12 or more teams could further diminish the relevance of conference championships. They may remain important for tradition and revenue, but their impact on determining the best team nationally will continue to fade. In practice, these games now function more as celebratory finales than essential competitive benchmarks.
In conclusion, while the SEC title still commands respect from coaches like Smart and energizes local economies, its strategic importance in college football’s evolving postseason landscape is declining. Fans may cheer loudly, but the trophy itself increasingly feels ceremonial.
