Siena University confirmed the passing of men's lacrosse head coach Liam Gleason, just days after he turned 41. Gleason suffered a fatal traumatic brain injury from a fall at his home on Sunday, November 29, and died on Wednesday, December 3.
"This sudden, heartbreaking loss is beyond comprehension," said Siena president Chuck Seifert. "Liam was admired and cherished by everyone who knew him. Our community was fortunate to have him in our lives."
Gleason is survived by his wife Jaclyn, daughter Kennedy, and sons Penn and Tate. A funeral service will be held on campus on Saturday, December 6.
"The entire Siena community mourns this tragic event," added athletic director John D'Argenio. "We extend our support, prayers, and love to Jaclyn, Kennedy, Penn, Tate, and all who were close to Liam, including our lacrosse players and alumni. Liam enriched Siena with his spirit, dedication, and kindness."
During his tenure at Siena, Gleason led the Saints to a MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in his seventh season in 2025.
Prior to his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support his family, raising over $600,000. "Liam brought light to everyone around him," the page states. "He was an incredible father, husband, coach, and friend, whose love and generosity knew no bounds."
Friends, family, and players from Siena and the University at Albany paid tribute to Gleason with a Hero Walk at Albany Medical Center, honoring his commitment to organ donation. "Liam was passionate about helping others and will continue to do so through organ donation," the GoFundMe update noted.
Support for Gleason extended beyond Siena, with rival lacrosse programs, including Bryant, Sacred Heart, and Canisius, contributing to the campaign. Duke mens lacrosse coach John Danowski also donated, emphasizing the close-knit nature of the lacrosse community.
Albany broadcaster Mike Tesoriero described Gleason as "the kindest person you'll ever meet," noting that the overwhelming support reflects the impact he had on everyone around him. "Liam's generosity and character transcended lacrosse. He touched countless lives, and his legacy will not be forgotten."
Author's Commentary: Remembering Liam Gleason
The sudden passing of Liam Gleason at just 41 is a profound loss for the Siena community and the broader lacrosse world. His contributions on and off the field went far beyond wins and championships; they were defined by mentorship, dedication, and a generosity that left a lasting mark on everyone he encountered.
Gleason's leadership led Siena to a MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, achievements that highlight his skill and commitment as a coach. Yet, it was his character—his warmth, integrity, and willingness to support others—that has inspired such an outpouring of grief and support from players, colleagues, and rival programs alike.
The unprecedented fundraising efforts, crossing institutional rivalries, and the Hero Walk honoring his organ donation reflect the depth of his impact. Liam Gleason's legacy is now carried forward not only through the lives he touched personally but also through the continued generosity and community spirit he championed. His memory will remain a guiding example for both current and future members of the lacrosse community.
