USF appoints Brian Hartline from Ohio State as head football coach

The University of South Florida has appointed Brian Hartline, currently the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, as the head coach of its football program, the school announced on Wednesday.

Hartline, 39, has spent the past eight years with the Buckeyes, serving as wide receivers coach, offensive coordinator, and offensive assistant. During his tenure, Ohio State produced numerous top-tier pass catchers and highly effective offensive units. He is widely recognized for his talent in recruiting and developing elite players.

"I am thrilled to take on the role of head football coach at USF," Hartline said in a statement. "This opportunity to lead a program as a first-time head coach is a dream for me and my family."

Rob Higgins, USFs CEO of athletics, praised Hartlines hiring: "Brian Hartline was our top choice to guide our football program into an exciting new chapter. He is a dedicated recruiter, an exceptional developer of talent, and brings a championship mindset to the team. We are confident he will elevate our program to new heights."

Hartline is no stranger to Florida, having spent six seasons of his professional playing career in Miami and recruiting extensively in the state and the Bay area. As a player, he was a wide receiver at Ohio State from 2005 to 2008 before a seven-year NFL career.

During his coaching career at Ohio State, Hartline worked with standout players including Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Chris Olave, Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, Terry McLaurin, Jeremiah Smith, and Carnell Tate. His expertise in developing receivers into NFL-level talent is well documented.

Hartline will succeed Alex Golesh, who led USF to a 9-3 record in his final season before accepting the head coaching position at Auburn. Under Golesh, the Bulls went 23-15 over three seasons and ranked among the top teams in scoring.

Hartline will remain with Ohio State through the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes, currently 12-0, are set to face the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten title game. Ohio State ranks first nationally in defense and 13th in points per game, while USF ranks 18th in passing yards per game.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day expressed support for Hartline: "He has worked tirelessly as both a player and a coach here. This is a well-deserved opportunity, and I am excited to see what he accomplishes as a head coach."

Analysis of Brian Hartline’s Appointment as USF Head Coach

The University of South Florida’s decision to hire Brian Hartline as the new head coach of its football program marks a significant step toward a potential new era of success. Hartline, 39, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success at Ohio State. His extensive background in developing top-tier wide receivers and his recruiting skills make him a promising figure for USF’s future.

Having worked with high-profile athletes like Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Chris Olave, and Marvin Harrison Jr., Hartline’s reputation as an elite recruiter and developer of NFL-caliber talent is well-established. This could prove crucial in elevating USF’s program, especially considering the university’s ambitions to strengthen its football team. Hartline’s familiarity with Florida, both as a former NFL player and through his recruitment efforts, adds a layer of local expertise that will be beneficial in securing top talent within the state.

Additionally, USF's recent success under Alex Golesh, who led the team to a 9-3 record in his final season, sets high expectations for Hartline. His challenge will be to build upon Golesh’s achievements while bringing his own vision and strategy to the Bulls' football program. This transition comes at a critical time, as USF aims to remain competitive both regionally and nationally. Hartline’s leadership and experience could help propel the team to new heights, but it remains to be seen how quickly his methods will take hold and yield results.
