What lessons 49ers QB Brock Purdy took away from Mac Jones during his time out with a toe injury

While sidelined by a turf toe injury, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy found unexpected lessons from New Englands Mac Jones. Typically, the backup observes the starter, but in this case, Purdy absorbed strategies and mindset tips from Jones while rehabbing.

I learned a lot about efficiency, Purdy shared on KNBRs Murph and Markus. Its about taking what the defense gives you, staying on the field, and finding ways to score pointseven if it means settling for a field goal after a checkdown.

Missing eight games this season, Purdy credited his interaction with Jones for helping him develop as a quarterback. These small insights are part of being an NFL quarterback. We push each other, learn from each other, and Im very grateful for that, Purdy said.

Jones performed admirably in the interim, leading the 49ers to a 5-3 record during Purdys absence. He displayed remarkable efficiency, averaging 215.1 passing yards per game and completing 69.6% of his passes, a career high.

Seeing him keep the team competitive and make plays at a high level was really impressive, Purdy added.

Beyond technical skills, Purdy noticed Jones approach to leading the offense. Hes charismatic and fun, which is great to observe. I take my role seriously, but its refreshing to see someone enjoy the position while performing at a high level, Purdy said.

Returning in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals, Purdy has averaged 187 passing yards per game with a 67.6% completion rate through Week 13, throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions. While individual numbers are modest, the 49ers have won all three games since his return.

With the lessons learned during his recovery, Purdy aims to continue leading the 49ers toward playoff contention.
