Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are aiming for another high-profile victory this Thursday as they face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving. Dallas entered the matchup following a surprising 24-21 win over the reigning champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, and hope to continue that momentum against Kansas City.
Prescott has been having an impressive season, recording 276 completions for 2,941 yards and 23 touchdowns before Thursdays game. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback is eager to add to these stats against the formidable Chiefs.
During the second quarter of the game, Prescott was involved in a controversial play that could lead to disciplinary action from the NFL. On a second-and-7 from the Dallas 18-yard line, Prescotts pass fell incomplete, but he was hit hard by Chiefs rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte immediately afterward. No penalty was called, though Prescott clearly expressed his frustration to the officials.
According to NFL rules, roughing the passer is penalized when a defender makes an unnecessary physical act against a player in a passing stance. Such a penalty results in 15 yards and an automatic first down. While no flag was thrown on Gillotte during the game, the NFL officiating department reviews all plays, and this incident could receive further attention. A roughing-the-passer infraction carries a $17,389 fine for a first offense and $23,186 for a repeat violation. Gillotte has not been fined this season.
Both Gillotte and the Chiefs now await the leagues potential decision, which will be released in the gameday accountability report.
On the field, Prescott and the Cowboys emerged victorious in a closely contested Thanksgiving matchup, defeating Kansas City 31-28 and improving their record to 6-5-1. Prescott delivered another strong performance, completing 27 of 39 passes for 320 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Analysis: Prescott's Strong Performance Overshadowed by Controversial Hit
As the Dallas Cowboys celebrated a hard-fought victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving, their quarterback Dak Prescott delivered another stellar performance, continuing his impressive season. However, his standout play was marred by a controversial hit that could result in further scrutiny from the NFL. Although the Cowboys secured a 31-28 win, the aftermath of the second-quarter incident involving Prescott and Chiefs rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte may cast a shadow over the game.
In the second quarter, Prescott was hit immediately after releasing an incomplete pass, with Gillotte's hit raising concerns about unnecessary roughness. While the referees did not call a penalty during the game, the NFL’s officiating department has the power to review such incidents. The potential for disciplinary action remains as the league determines whether the hit violated roughing the passer rules. A fine could follow if the NFL determines that the contact was indeed excessive and unwarranted.
For Prescott, this incident adds an additional layer of uncertainty heading into future matchups. While his 320-yard, two-touchdown performance solidified his leadership role on the team, the NFL’s review process will keep both him and Gillotte on edge. It will be crucial for the Cowboys to focus on maintaining their momentum while awaiting the league’s decision, as the outcome of this review could impact future encounters and further influence player safety discussions.
