The Philadelphia Eagles faced another disappointing performance, leaving fans frustrated and some leaving the stadium before the final whistle. Last season, even simple plays like the "tush push" were highly effective, but this year, those same plays are failing.
In a telling moment during their recent game against the Chicago Bears, the Eagles attempted a Jalen Hurts sneak on third-and-1 at the Bears 12-yard line. What is usually a near-automatic conversion ended in disaster when Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright stripped the ball and recovered the fumble, halting the Eagles' drive.
The Eagles fell 24-15 to the Bears at home, following a shocking 21-0 collapse against the Dallas Cowboys just days earlier. Chicago dominated the game in almost every aspect, and by the fourth quarter, fans were leaving as frustration peaked.
Philadelphia is currently 8-4 and atop the NFC East, a record that would satisfy many teams. However, neither the team nor its fans are content. The offense struggled significantly, managing just two first downs and holding the ball for only nine minutes in the first half. DeVonta Smith had a 30-yard reception, while the rest of the half totaled just 53 yards.
Wide receiver A.J. Brown pointed to execution as the key issue behind the offensive struggles. The defense was equally ineffective, allowing Chicago to rush for 142 yards in the first half at an average of 6.5 yards per carry. By early in the fourth quarter, both Bears running backs DAndre Swift and Kyle Monangai had surpassed 100 rushing yards, a feat Chicago had not seen since 1985. The Bears finished with 281 rushing yards.
The Eagles defense, previously strong in victories over the Packers and Lions, struggled to contain the Cowboys last week and were dominated by Chicago on Friday. Despite being outplayed, the halftime score was only 10-3, but Philadelphias overall poor performance made a collapse inevitable.
Even when the Eagles briefly found success in the second half, frustration persisted. After a Hurts touchdown pass to A.J. Brown, kicker Jake Elliott missed the extra point, leaving the Bears ahead 10-9. Highlights this season have done little to reduce fan frustration.
Head coach Nick Sirianni defended offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, stating he has no plans to change the play-caller despite ongoing criticism. However, the teams stagnant play-calling and inconsistent execution are major concerns as the playoffs approach. Saquon Barkley has struggled to replicate last seasons form, recording just 56 yards on 13 carries in this game, with only one 100-yard performance this season. The passing game has also underperformed, exemplified by a miscommunication between Hurts and Smith that led to an incomplete pass on a rare open-field opportunity.
Sirianni noted that the Eagles problems are multifaceted. Simply changing play-calling would not address injuries, fatigue, or the inconsistency of a defense that ranked 20th in yards allowed after leading the NFL last year. With December approaching, there is little time to resolve these issues.
While the Eagles are likely to make the playoffs, the current form suggests Philadelphia may not progress far, leaving fans concerned about another early postseason exit.
Analysis: Eagles’ Struggles Continue as Key Issues Remain Unresolved
The Philadelphia Eagles are facing increasing pressure as their performance continues to falter. Despite sitting atop the NFC East with an 8-4 record, the team’s struggles on both offense and defense have left fans questioning their chances for a successful postseason run. After back-to-back losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears, it’s clear that the Eagles are not playing up to the high standards they set last season. With the playoffs fast approaching, the team has little time to address its shortcomings.
On offense, execution has been a major concern. Even staple plays like Jalen Hurts' quarterback sneaks, which were almost automatic last year, are now failing. The missed opportunities were highlighted during the Bears game when a third-and-1 conversion attempt ended in a costly fumble. Wide receiver A.J. Brown pinpointed execution as the core issue, but simply adjusting the play-calling won't be enough. The Eagles need to correct their offensive rhythm, especially with their struggles to sustain drives and produce yardage consistently.
Defensively, the Eagles have not been able to contain their opponents, particularly in the running game. In the loss to Chicago, they allowed 281 rushing yards, including a standout performance from both Bears running backs, who surpassed 100 yards each. This is a significant departure from their strong defensive play earlier in the season, and it underscores the team’s vulnerability in key areas. Head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged that the problems are multifaceted, including injuries, fatigue, and an inconsistent defense, which ranks 20th in yards allowed after leading the league last year.
As the Eagles approach December, time is running out to make necessary adjustments. While their playoff spot is likely secured, the team’s current form suggests they may not make a deep run, leaving fans concerned about another early postseason exit. The lack of consistency across both sides of the ball, combined with questionable coaching decisions, has left the Eagles with more questions than answers as they head into the final stretch of the season.
