Fuzzy Zoeller, the professional golfer who claimed two major titles and won the Masters in his first attempt, has died at the age of 74. The PGA Tour confirmed his passing, with Commissioner Jay Monahan describing Zoeller as "a true original."
"The PGA Tour mourns the loss of Fuzzy Zoeller. His exceptional skill and charm left a lasting imprint on golf. Fuzzy combined competitive excellence with humor, earning admiration from fans and fellow players alike. We honor his extraordinary legacy and extend heartfelt condolences to his family."
Born Frank Zoeller, he rose to prominence in 1979 when he won the Masters on his debut. The victory came after a thrilling three-way sudden-death playoff against Ed Sneed and Tom Watson. Zoeller became the third golfer to win the Masters on their first attempt, following Horton Smith and Gene Sarazen.
Although Zoeller never claimed victories at the PGA Championship or the Open Championship, he did secure the U.S. Open title in 1984, giving him two major championship wins in total.
Controversy Surrounding Comments About Tiger Woods
In 1997, Zoeller sparked controversy with a racially insensitive remark about Tiger Woods, who was 21 at the time and on his way to a dominant Masters victory. When asked for his opinion, Zoeller joked about hoping Woods would not serve fried chicken at the next year's event, a comment that drew widespread criticism.
As a result, Zoeller lost a sponsorship with KMart and withdrew from the Greater Greensboro Classic to apologize to Woods. He expressed regret, saying, "I have to make things right with Tiger first before anything else," acknowledging the gravity of his statement.
Reflecting on the incident in 2008, Zoeller called it "the worst thing I've gone through in my entire life" and wrote that he had apologized numerous times and had friends who could attest that the comment did not reflect who he truly was. He admitted, however, that "this incident will never, ever go away."
Later Career and Legacy
Despite the controversy, Zoeller continued competing professionally. He earned two Champions Tour victories in 2002 and 2024, along with three other senior wins in 2002, 2008, and 2009. His competitive skill, humor, and memorable personality have left a lasting mark on the world of golf.
Author's Commentary: Remembering Fuzzy Zoeller
Fuzzy Zoeller's passing at 74 marks the end of a significant chapter in professional golf. His early career was defined by historic achievements, most notably winning the Masters on his first attempt in 1979, a feat achieved by only two others before him. Zoeller’s U.S. Open victory in 1984 cemented his status as a two-time major champion and a respected competitor on the PGA Tour.
His career was not without controversy. The 1997 remark about Tiger Woods brought criticism and tangible consequences, including a lost sponsorship. Zoeller’s multiple apologies and reflections in later years highlight both personal accountability and the lasting impact of public statements in sports.
Beyond his competitive record, Zoeller’s personality and humor made him a memorable figure in golf. His Champions Tour victories and contributions to the sport show a professional dedication that persisted despite past missteps. Today, the PGA Tour and fans remember not only his skill but also his distinctive presence that enlivened tournaments for decades.
