The Los Angeles Rams have opted to release kicker Joshua Karty, a move many anticipated this week. With Harrison Mevis performing strongly over a three-game stretch as the starting kicker, Karty's position became redundant.
Head coach Sean McVay shared with reporters that the team initially planned to keep both Karty and Mevis on the roster. However, injuries at other positions forced the team to prioritize roster spots elsewhere.
"It was purely a matter of roster management," McVay said. "Weve had some hits at the defensive back position, and with Rob Havenstein and Tyler Higbee going on IR, we had to make tough decisions. Considering the structure of our 48- and 53-man rosters, maintaining two kickers was simply not feasible."
McVay also mentioned that there remains a chance Karty could return via the practice squad if he clears waivers. "Im hopeful that his journey with us can continue in that capacity if it aligns with our plans," he added.
Throughout the season, Karty showed inconsistency. While his knuckleball kickoffs were impressive, he struggled with extra points and field goals, missing eight of 41 attempts, placing him near the bottom of the league in conversion rate. Although McVay did not explicitly cite Karty's on-field performance as the reason for the release, the move certainly allowed Mevis, who has been flawless, to step in permanently.
Mevis has converted all 13 of his extra point attempts and both field goal tries, including a 52-yard kick. McVay expressed confidence in the Rams current kicking situation as the team prepares for a crucial Week 13 matchup that could strengthen their lead in the NFC.
Analysis: Rams’ Kicker Decision Reflects Roster Pressures
The release of Joshua Karty highlights the practical challenges the Los Angeles Rams face in managing a 53-man roster. While Karty showed flashes of potential, his inconsistency on field goals and extra points made him a less secure option than Harrison Mevis, whose flawless early performance solidified his role.
Head coach Sean McVay emphasized that the decision was driven by injuries and roster needs rather than performance alone. The team’s defensive backfield and key offensive players required immediate attention, leaving no room to maintain two kickers. This illustrates how NFL teams must balance individual talent against overall roster flexibility.
With Mevis now firmly in the starting role, the Rams gain stability at kicker for the upcoming critical games. Karty’s possible return via the practice squad offers a pathway back, but for now, the move ensures the team can address more pressing positional needs without compromising special teams efficiency.
