Vanderbilt concluded its regular season with a commanding 45-24 victory over long-time rival Tennessee, a result that appeared to strengthen the programs case for its first College Football Playoff berth. Yet the latest AP Top 25 update painted a different picture, as the Commodores slipped from No. 12 to No. 13 in the new rankings released Sunday.
Although the AP poll carries less influence than the College Football Playoff committees rankings at this stage, the unexpected downgrade still drew attention due to the decisive nature of Vanderbilts win. Miami took over the No. 12 position after a strong showing against Pittsburgh to reach a 10-2 record, leading to the direct swap with Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt had entered the matchup with Tennessee as a slight underdog, which made the 21-point margin even more noteworthy. The victory delivered head coach Clark Lea his first triumph over the in-state rival and marked the Commodores first win against the Volunteers since 2018.
If the AP poll were the standard for determining the Playoff field, Vanderbilts minor drop would place them outside the qualifying range until the conference championships conclude. The team nonetheless finished the regular season with the first 10-win campaign in program history, despite falling short of reaching the SEC title game.
The performance against Tennessee capped the strongest season the program has produced. Several team records were broken, and the victory ended a prolonged losing streak to the Volunteers. Quarterback Diego Pavia also strengthened his Heisman Trophy bid with 268 passing yards, 165 rushing yards and two total touchdowns, positioning him for one of the highest finishes by any player in school history.
Vanderbilt now stands among SEC contenders such as Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Texas in the race for a Playoff spot. Ole Miss remains the most unpredictable of the group after the departure of Lane Kiffin to LSU, with its postseason fate hinging on the SEC Championship result.
