Vikings release Adam Thielen at his request to join a contender

The Minnesota Vikings have officially released wide receiver Adam Thielen on December 1, following his request to leave the team and join a playoff contender. Thielen's return to Minnesota, which began with a trade from the Carolina Panthers in August, did not unfold as hoped for either side.

In a social media statement, Thielen explained that he wanted the opportunity to compete for more playing time during the final weeks of his 12-year NFL career. "After conversations this past weekend, and out of respect for Adam, we agreed to let him pursue opportunities elsewhere," the Vikings said. "Adam is among the greatest in Vikings history, and we wish him and his family continued success."

Thielen, who started his career as an undrafted free agent and became a two-time Pro Bowl selection, saw limited action in his second stint with Minnesota. The team, struggling at 4-8 this season and undergoing a quarterback transition with J.J. McCarthy, did not provide Thielen significant offensive snaps. He started four games but has not exceeded 14 offensive plays in any contest since Week 3 and was inactive for the 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on November 30.

During the 2025 season, Thielen recorded only eight receptions for 69 yards, highlighting the limited role he played in the Vikings' offense.
