The Weiseespitze glacier in the Eastern Alps, holding ice over six thousand years old, is melting rapidly. This unique ice preserves chemical traces of past climate and human activity, but rising temperatures threaten to erase centuries of invaluable environmental history.
The ice cap of Weiseespitze, located high in the Eastern Alps at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters above sea level, lies along the border between Austria and Italy. This glacier has long served as a natural archive of atmospheric history. Layers of snow accumulated over thousands of years gradually compressed into dense ice, trapping airborne particles and chemical compounds that reflect environmental conditions from different historical periods. Today this valuable record is threatened as rising global temperatures accelerate the melting of the glacier.
Researchers determined that the oldest ice preserved in the Weiseespitze glacier formed roughly 6,000 years ago during the mid-Holocene, a relatively warm climatic phase that followed the last major ice age. Because the ice formed gradually from compacted snowfall, each layer contains traces of dust, pollutants, and microscopic particles from the atmosphere at the time it was deposited. These layers allow scientists to reconstruct changes in climate and environmental activity over thousands of years.
Between 2019 and 2024 international research teams conducted multiple expeditions to the glacier in order to recover ice cores before the ice disappears. During these expeditions scientists drilled deep into the ice and extracted cylindrical cores several meters long. One of the most important samples measured about 10 meters in length. The material preserved inside these cores provides chronological information about atmospheric composition, pollution levels, and natural environmental events.
The results of the analysis were presented in a scientific study published in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science. Laboratory examination involved melting the ice cores layer by layer and collecting the resulting liquid samples for chemical testing. Researchers searched for specific markers that reveal past natural events and human activity. Among the detected substances were lead, zinc, manganese, and levoglucosan, a compound produced during the burning of biomass.
A noticeable rise in levoglucosan was identified in ice layers dating to the end of the 12th century. This increase corresponds with a similar peak recorded in peat samples from the Schwarzboden mire, located roughly 20 kilometers southeast of the glacier. Scientists interpret these signals as evidence of repeated large fire events during the Medieval Warm Period between approximately 900 and 1300 CE. Historical climate conditions during that era were characterized by warmer and drier summers, which likely increased the frequency of wildfires. At the same time, expanding human settlements cleared forests for agriculture, further contributing to the burning of vegetation.
The ice cores also revealed significant concentrations of arsenic during two periods: between the 11th and 14th centuries and again between the 15th and 17th centuries. These chemical signals correspond with historical mining and metal processing activities in regions of present-day Germany, Austria, and Italy where silver and copper production was widespread. Additional peaks of arsenic and sulfate compounds indicate the influence of major volcanic eruptions in the Northern Hemisphere, including eruptions that occurred during the 13th century.
Such findings demonstrate how glaciers preserve a detailed atmospheric record that reflects both natural processes and human industrial activity. By examining chemical signatures trapped within ancient ice, scientists can measure long-term changes in environmental pollution and compare pre-industrial atmospheric conditions with those that developed after the Industrial Revolution.
However, the glacier that preserves this historical information is shrinking quickly. During an expedition in 2025 researchers discovered that approximately 14 meters of ice had disappeared since their first fieldwork at the site six years earlier. This rapid loss means that layers containing records of several centuries may already have melted away before they could be studied.
Scientists monitoring glaciers across the Eastern Alps warn that climate change could cause up to 30 percent of the region’s glaciers to disappear completely by 2030. The loss of these ice masses would eliminate valuable environmental archives that document thousands of years of atmospheric history.
Despite the accelerating melt, researchers intend to return to the Weiseespitze glacier for at least one additional expedition to extract remaining ice cores and preserve as much information as possible. The collected samples will continue to be used to study historical climate conditions and the development of atmospheric pollution.
Glaciers function as long-term environmental records, storing evidence of the planet’s atmospheric composition across millennia. As these ice formations melt, the scientific data preserved inside them is permanently lost. For this reason researchers emphasize the urgency of recovering and preserving glacial records while they still exist, since the information contained in these frozen archives helps scientists understand past climate patterns and evaluate current environmental changes.
