During the opening day of the Miss Universe competition in Thailand last month, pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil reportedly called Bosch a dumb head during a disagreement over a sponsorship event. When Itsaragrisil attempted to involve security, Bosch left the scene in protest, followed by several other contestants in solidarity.
The incident gained widespread attention online, and after Bosch, representing Mexico, was announced as Miss Universe on November 21, speculation arose that the pageant favored her because of the confrontation.
I think I made history, so why not, Bosch told ABC News when asked if her actions influenced the outcome. But no, I put in the same effort as every contestant. This is our role. She added that she had been frightened to confront Itsaragrisil, but felt maintaining her dignity was more important than any prize.
Itsaragrisil issued an apology the day following the incident.
Adding to the controversy, Miss Universe judge Omar Harfouch resigned, claiming that a secret vote had pre-selected the top 30 contestants. Harfouch wrote on Instagram that he could not validate decisions he was not involved in, especially given the potential political sensitivities of eliminated countries.
The Miss Universe organization denied any secret voting, stating that Harfouch was referring to an independent social initiative. Bosch also dismissed the complaint, suggesting it was motivated by the judges personal social media interests.
There were also rumors linking Boschs father, an oil executive, to business dealings with a pageant co-owner, prompting speculation about favoritism. Bosch firmly denied any influence, stating, My father has nothing to do with the organization. How would anyone buy a crown? Certainly not in Miss Universe.
Despite the surrounding controversy, Bosch confirmed she has no intention of giving up her title. Im not here for fame or modeling or searching for a husband, she said. I have a mission to serve others and help wherever I can.
