Artemis II astronauts express happiness upon returning to Earth

Significant Milestones Achieved by Artemis II

The Artemis II astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen—accomplished several notable firsts. They were the first humans to observe the far side of the Moon in person, the first to witness a solar eclipse from lunar orbit, and set a record for the greatest distance traveled from Earth. On April 6, Hansen suggested naming two lunar craters to honor the mission. The crew proposed "Integrity" for one crater, after the Orion spacecraft, and "Carroll" for the second, in memory of Wiseman's late wife, who passed away in 2020. Wiseman shared that this tribute had been planned by his crewmates before the launch and described it as "the most beautiful thing" he had ever heard.

Post-Mission Medical Evaluations and Adjustments

Since returning, the astronauts have undergone comprehensive medical examinations and debriefings with the Artemis II science team. Wiseman noted, "We have not had that decompression or reflection time." Immediately after splashdown, the astronauts were transported to a U.S. Navy ship for medical evaluations. Wiseman recounted an emotional encounter with the ship’s chaplain, stating, "I just broke down in tears," even though he is not religious.

Emotional Reunion and Earth Readjustment

After traveling over 695,000 miles, the crew emphasized the joy of reuniting with their families. Koch shared that she had anticipated the reunion throughout the mission, although readjusting to Earth's gravity proved challenging. Hansen recalled a lighthearted moment: "I asked them to open the curtains, but then I fell asleep and they closed them."

Koch said a video call with her husband, in which he expressed that she had made a difference, brought her to tears. "That's all we ever wanted," she said.
