Scientists achieve groundbreaking results in solar panel efficiency: 'Among the highest ever recorded'

Scientists have developed a new 2D3D perovskite solar cell structure that dramatically improves efficiency and durability setting records for perovskite technology and promising more reliable and accessible solar energy for homes and industry.
Researchers have announced a major advancement in solar panel efficiency through the development of innovative 2D/3D perovskite structures, offering some of the highest efficiencies ever recorded in perovskite solar cells. This breakthrough promises substantial improvements in durability and energy conversion, potentially transforming solar energy into a more accessible and reliable source.
New Perovskite Structure
The research team, led by scientists at the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology along with several collaborating institutions, has introduced a new thin 2D perovskite phase integrated into 3D perovskite solar cells. This approach enhances crystallization and reduces structural defects. Surface modification of tin dioxide with thioglycolic acid and oleylamine allows for improved bonding between the layers of perovskite, forming a heterojunction—a key interface between two distinct semiconductor materials. This structure reduces imperfections and strengthens the overall stability of the solar cells.
Impact on Solar Cell Efficiency
The main achievement of this innovation is a dramatic decrease in defects at the interfaces of the solar cells, improving durability and long-term performance. Defect levels have been reduced by more than 90%, allowing for longer-lasting energy production. The researchers report that large-area commercial modules now reach a power conversion efficiency of 22%, while small-area devices achieve 19% efficiency. These results place the technology among the highest efficiencies recorded for perovskite cells using 2D/3D heterojunctions.
Compared to traditional silicon panels, which typically deliver around 22% efficiency, these new perovskite cells offer a significant competitive advantage. Perovskite solar cells are expected to achieve efficiencies between 5% and 23% with extended lifespans, with previous reports suggesting the maximum efficiency of perovskite cells could approach 30% under optimized conditions.

The team from Qingdao anticipates that this method can be adapted from laboratory experiments to large-scale industrial manufacturing. The 2D/3D perovskite structure provides both enhanced operational stability and scalable production potential. Researchers are also exploring hybrid approaches that combine perovskite with silicon to produce tandem cells, which leverage the strengths of both materials to further improve efficiency and stability.
