Amtrak continues to face significant disruptions in the Northeast Corridor following a recent snowstorm. As of February 24th, travel remains limited, with numerous train cancellations and delays. Key routes, including New York to Boston, are still affected, and full service recovery is ongoing.

Amtrak continues efforts to recover from snowstorm

The Northeast Corridor remains heavily affected by the recent snowstorm, causing continued disruptions to Amtrak train operations. On Tuesday, February 24th, travel along the corridor remained limited, with multiple trains delayed or canceled due to the lingering impact of the storm. Key connections between major cities have yet to resume normal service.

As of 9 a.m. ET, no trains were operating between New York City and Boston, according to the latest rail maps. The affected section of the corridor continues to experience interruptions, slowing the restoration of travel across this crucial route. Amtrak began tentative efforts on Monday to resume service, but full operational status has not yet been achieved.

Train Cancellations and Delays

Several Amtrak services in the Northeast announced cancellations on Monday. Affected trains include:

  • Train Nos. 2201, 2203, 2205, 2206, 2214, 2218, 2222, 2223, 2248, 2249, 2250, and 2271
  • Northeast Regional Nos. 88, 101, 109, 143, 142, 144, 146, 150, 153, 160, 168, 194, and 196, along with 135, 163, and 165 between Boston and New York, and No. 103
  • Vermonter Nos. 61 and 64
  • Foundational trains Nos. 607, 658, 650, and 661
  • Additional services Nos. 233, 236, 243, and 244

Delays have left travelers facing extended travel times and limited alternatives. The corridor continues to experience slow, disrupted operations, with the pace of recovery varying across different routes.

Notable Delays on Long-Distance Trains

  • Lake Shore Limited: Departed New York three hours and 35 minutes late, arriving in Cleveland four hours and 33 minutes behind schedule.
  • Silver Meteor: Departed New York five hours and 41 minutes late, currently running over seven hours late.
  • The Crescent: Experienced a delay of three hours and 41 minutes, now trailing Greenville, South Carolina, by two hours and 43 minutes.

The snowstorm has resulted in widespread disruption, forcing passengers to adjust travel plans and creating uncertainty in arrival and departure times across multiple routes.

Amtrak Booking System Outage

Compounding the operational challenges, Amtrak's booking system experienced a temporary outage on Monday evening due to network issues. This outage affected travelers attempting to purchase tickets or modify itineraries, further complicating recovery efforts and creating additional challenges for passengers.

Current Status and Recommendations

Train service along the Northeast Corridor continues to be significantly affected. Passengers are advised to check for real-time updates on the status of their trains before traveling. While some long-distance services have resumed, full restoration of normal operations is ongoing and may take additional time.

Amtrak crews are working to repair and restore service along affected routes, but travelers should expect potential delays and cancellations. Careful planning and monitoring of schedules remain essential for anyone traveling through the impacted areas.

Conclusion

The aftermath of the snowstorm continues to disrupt Amtrak operations in the Northeast. Cancellations and delays are ongoing, and full recovery across all routes is expected to be gradual. Passengers are urged to remain informed about service updates and to allow extra time for travel as Amtrak works to restore normal operations across the corridor.
