E-bike scheme gets new docking stations

A new e-bike network is launching in Bradford next week, offering 200 electric bikes across 41 docking stations. The LNER Bradford Beryl Bikes program will provide an eco-friendly transport option for locals and visitors, supported by a mobile app for easy rentals and payments.

A new wave of electric mobility is arriving in Bradford as the city prepares to introduce an expanded shared e-bike network next week. The initiative, named the LNER Bradford Beryl Bikes program, will enable residents and visitors to rent electric bicycles from multiple points across the city and return them to any other docking station within the network, providing a flexible and sustainable transport option for everyday journeys.

The system will feature approximately 200 e-bikes supported by 41 docking stations strategically located across Bradford. While the complete list of station sites remains confidential until the official launch, several key locations have already been installed. Among these, two new transit hubs stand out: one located near Norfolk Gardens, close to Hall Ings, and another adjacent to the Broadway Shopping Centre. These hubs are designed to offer seamless connections and facilitate easy access to the city's central areas.

The program is financed partly through £800,000 generated from Bradford's Clean Air Zone, while the majority of funding comes from Beryl, the company contracted to operate the scheme. Beryl positions itself as the UK's largest provider of shared sustainable transport and is responsible for managing the e-bike fleet, the docking stations, and the supporting infrastructure.

In addition to the physical network, a mobile application will be introduced to simplify the rental process. Through the app, users can make payments directly, locate docking stations in real-time, plan journeys, and check bike availability. The e-bikes are specifically designed to reduce effort during travel, assisting riders in climbing hills and covering longer distances. Beryl emphasizes that the bikes are suitable for commuting to offices, educational campuses, shopping areas, or social events, offering a cleaner, faster, and more convenient mode of transport.

Beryl will maintain a dedicated operations team responsible for daily maintenance and battery swaps, ensuring the fleet remains fully functional. This team will also monitor the system to address any operational issues or antisocial behavior, providing on-the-ground support for users throughout the city.

The scheme was initially announced in 2024 and planned to launch in spring 2025, coinciding with Bradford's City of Culture year. Delays, however, postponed the launch until December, when Beryl officially secured the contract to implement the program. With the rollout imminent, the e-bike network will provide a city-wide transport alternative, encouraging sustainable travel and making urban journeys more accessible.
