Cadent seeks public input on its 93-mile hydrogen pipeline in Nottinghamshire, aiming to supply low-carbon hydrogen to industrial sites and support regional decarbonization while engaging local communities in planning and design decisions.

Cadent is advancing a 93-mile hydrogen pipeline across Nottinghamshire, aiming to deliver low-carbon hydrogen to industrial sites while actively engaging local communities. The pipeline, stretching approximately 150 kilometers from the Humber industrial zone to Newark, is part of a broader initiative to support industrial decarbonization in the East Coast region.

Project Purpose and Industrial Benefits

The H2East Pipeline is designed to help major industrial users transition from natural gas to low-carbon hydrogen. Companies such as British Sugar, which currently rely on natural gas for critical production, are expected to benefit from the pipeline. By adopting hydrogen, these businesses can reduce carbon emissions while maintaining essential operations. The infrastructure will include both subterranean and above-ground sections to ensure operational efficiency and maintenance accessibility.

Regional Collaboration

The project is a joint effort by Cadent, National Gas, and Northern Gas Networks under the East Coast Hydrogen alliance. It represents a strategic step in reshaping the regional energy supply for manufacturers, chemical plants, brickworks, and food producers, replacing traditional methane fuel with cleaner hydrogen energy.

Public Consultation Details

The consultation period will run for six weeks, ending on 14 April. Cadent has scheduled a series of engagement sessions to present the pipeline route, associated infrastructure, and technical details. The consultation aims to gather input from both businesses and residents, helping to inform the project's planning and design.

  • 21 March: South Clifton Coronation Hall, Newark, and Egmanton Village Hall
  • 25 March: Norwell Village Hall in Carlton-on-Trent, South Muskham, and Little Carlton Village Hall in Newark

Statements from Project Leadership

Adam Knight, project director for the H2East Pipeline at Cadent, emphasized the value of public feedback, noting that community and business input will influence the project’s route and design decisions. He described the consultation as a key step before formal planning submissions.

Planning and Regulatory Process

The pipeline will undergo the Government’s Development Consent Order (DCO) process, which may take up to five years. This regulatory review ensures compliance with environmental, safety, and community standards prior to construction.

Government Support and Investment

In June of the previous year, the UK government announced a £500 million investment in hydrogen infrastructure for industrial regions. This funding supports the development of low-carbon energy networks and facilitates industrial adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source.

Strategic Context

The H2East Pipeline is part of the UK’s wider strategy to establish regional hydrogen networks, contributing to reduced industrial carbon emissions. Additional project details are available through the H2East Pipeline and East Coast Hydrogen information portals, providing access for interested stakeholders to explore technical and planning information.
