Currently, Brazil holds second place in global beef production, but it is on track to potentially surpass the United States in the near future. Official 2025 data from the USDA will only be released in spring 2026, which will confirm whether Brazil has claimed the top spot. Industry analysts are already projecting that Brazil could become the leading beef producer by 2025.
China Comes in Third
China ranks third in global beef production, contributing roughly 13% of the world's total output, which amounts to approximately 7.79 million metric tons per year. Despite this, the country has experienced a slight decline in domestic cattle numbers in recent years. In 2024, both the total herd size and the number of breeding cows fell by around 4%, leading to increased beef imports throughout 2025 to meet domestic demand.
Historically, China has been one of the largest importers of beef worldwide. In 2024, it imported about 8.32 billion pounds, continuing a trend of significant reliance on foreign beef to satisfy local consumption needs.
