Town square to be transformed into park and plaza

Plans are underway to transform Hessle Square in East Yorkshire, introducing a park and plaza designed for community events and local markets. East Riding of Yorkshire Council announced that a public consultation will guide the development and funding of the project.

The redesign also aims to enhance the area with additional seating, greenery, sheltered spots, safer pedestrian pathways, and improved accessibility for all visitors. Council representatives emphasized that integrating public art, upgraded lighting, and measures to prevent anti-social behavior will help create a lively and welcoming environment.

Part of the proposal includes better pedestrian access and a thoughtfully designed park area. The council is conducting an online consultation alongside Hessle Town Council, open until 9 January. Details of in-person drop-in sessions will be shared via the council's social media channels.

The initiative focuses on strengthening walking routes and ensuring the square becomes an inviting, accessible hub for the community. Council leader Anne Handley remarked, "We are committed to supporting communities throughout the region, including Hessle, and we encourage residents to share their views on the future of Hessle Square."

In October, a separate 700,000 project began in Hessle to repave one of the main shopping streets and add new seating.
