Eight backcountry skiers have been confirmed dead and one remains missing after an avalanche struck the Sierra Nevada mountains north of Lake Tahoe. The victims, part of a group of fifteen, were caught in the avalanche during a winter storm, with six survivors rescued after hours of search efforts.
Authorities have confirmed that eight backcountry skiers who went missing after an avalanche in the Sierra Nevada mountains north of Lake Tahoe have been found dead. The victims were part of a group of fifteen skiers who had spent three days in the wilderness near Donner Pass. Their return journey was interrupted on Tuesday morning when an avalanche struck while they were navigating a rugged area.
The group consisted of eleven clients and four guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides. They had been staying in remote huts below Castle Peak, which reaches an elevation of 9,110 feet. Six skiers survived the avalanche and were rescued after approximately six hours by emergency services. The survivors were evacuated with injuries, and two were hospitalized. Among the group were nine women and six men, with four men and two women among the survivors. The rescued individuals were able to communicate with search teams using emergency beacons and iPhone SOS functions, as confirmed by Nevada County Sheriff Captain Russell Greene. The deceased skiers were also found with emergency beacons.
The avalanche occurred suddenly during a winter storm that had dropped up to 30 inches of snow across Northern California. Interstate 80 west of Truckee, California, was closed permanently due to dangerous conditions. Many ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area were forced to close or reduce operations. The Sierra Avalanche Center had issued a warning for the Central Sierra Nevada region on Tuesday morning, with the warning remaining in effect until Thursday. Steve Reynaud of the center emphasized that high avalanche danger persists and travel in or near avalanche terrain is not recommended.
The bodies of the deceased were found in close proximity to each other, but recovery was delayed due to hazardous conditions. Recovery efforts were planned to continue once conditions improved. Search teams left the mountain on Tuesday evening. Sheriff Moon noted that one of the deceased was a member of Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, highlighting the personal impact on the local community and volunteer search teams.
Blackbird Mountain Guides confirmed that their team was fully focused on search and rescue operations in the Castle Peak area and directed further inquiries to the Sheriff's office. It remains unclear whether the group disregarded the avalanche warning. Posts on Blackbird Mountain Guides' social media earlier in the weekend warned of unstable snow conditions capable of triggering avalanches.
This tragedy underscores the significant dangers of backcountry skiing, particularly during winter storms and periods of high avalanche risk. Historical records show similar deadly events, including the 1982 Alpine Meadows avalanche, which claimed seven lives. The recent Lake Tahoe avalanche highlights the extreme risks associated with skiing in uncontrolled mountainous terrain during severe winter conditions.
