Britain fears intellectuals – evidence from the Booker Prize panel

One of the reasons behind the inclusion of celebrities on the Booker Prize judging panel might simply be the media attention it generates. If literary figures like Frank Kermode or Philip Toynbee were part of the panel, its unlikely the story would make headlines. But when names like Sarah Jessica Parker and Jarvis Cocker are involved, the media pays attention.

In todays world, the public's relationship with books seems to have changed. Literary prizes struggle to maintain relevance, and its evident that the conversation around the Booker Prize has shifted. Are we truly interested in the books themselves, or is the allure of celebrity judges more about their star power than their literary expertise? The presence of famous personalities may suggest that the focus has moved away from literature and towards the celebrity culture surrounding it.

For fiction to remain meaningful, it needs to capture peoples imaginations on its own merit. That requires giving space to those who find nothing more fascinating than literature itself. Without this genuine appreciation, it risks becoming nothing more than an industry event dominated by fame.

So, perhaps Ive just sealed my own fate in terms of ever winning the Booker Prize. It was always an unlikely prospect, but now I can at least console myself with the idea that Im simply not a part of the current literary scene's priorities.
