California launches online platform for reporting misconduct by federal agents

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Wednesday the launch of a new online system allowing residents to report "potentially illegal actions by federal agents" within the state. The platform enables users to upload photos and videos directly to the California Department of Justice.

According to a statement from the governors office, the information submitted through the portal could support legal measures aimed at safeguarding the rights of Californians. "Federal agents must enforce the law responsibly and within constitutional limits," Bonta emphasized, noting concerns over incidents involving unmarked vehicles and aggressive detentions.

Governor Newsom stressed that state authorities will not tolerate misuse of power. "This portal provides a safe and simple way for residents to report what they witness and help hold officials accountable," he said. "No one is above the law."

To submit a report, users must provide contact information, indicate if they are reporting on someone elses behalf, and list the incident type, including options such as "voting interference," "warrantless search or arrest," "civil rights violation," or "excessive force." A brief description of the incident, up to 2,000 characters, and any relevant photos or videos can also be included.

The state cautions that submitting a report does not guarantee immediate legal action. Those needing legal advice are encouraged to contact the California State Bar or a local attorney. In emergencies, or if witnessing a crime in progress, residents should call 911, as the portal is not a substitute for direct law enforcement reporting.

Newsom has previously criticized federal actions in California, including the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles amid protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. The governor and other state officials have challenged these actions through public statements and legal channels, arguing that they infringe upon state authority and residents' rights.
