The California Supreme Court has disbarred John Eastman for his role in a scheme to submit fake electors after the 2020 election, highlighting the courts commitment to legal ethics and the protection of democratic processes in the state.
The California Supreme Court has officially revoked John Eastman’s license to practice law, marking a decisive rebuke for his participation in efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election. Eastman, who served as legal counsel to former President Donald Trump during the contested election period, orchestrated a scheme to present false slates of electors in multiple battleground states, including Georgia. The court’s ruling underscores the incompatibility of such actions with the ethical obligations required of all California attorneys.
In addition to disbarment, the court imposed a $5,000 sanction payable to the State Bar of California Client Security Fund, which compensates clients for financial losses resulting from misconduct by attorneys. The decision follows a detailed investigation by the California Bar, which began in September 2021, and a formal filing of eleven disciplinary charges in January 2023. The court found that Eastman made repeated false and misleading statements in court filings, public statements, and other communications, falsely questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election results and the authority of Vice President Pence concerning certified electoral votes on January 6, 2021.
Judge Roland’s findings in March 2024 highlighted Eastman’s deliberate creation of a phantom electorate designed to override the true outcome of the election. The court concluded that Eastman’s actions exploited his professional reputation as an attorney and constitutional scholar to lend credibility to baseless claims. The California Bar’s review, finalized in July, affirmed that Eastman’s conduct fundamentally violated legal ethics and the standards of honesty and integrity expected of licensed attorneys.
The disbarment has generated reactions from peers. Jeffrey Clark, another lawyer involved in the post-election efforts to challenge results, criticized the court’s decision, describing it as a “travesty” and asserting that Eastman’s role was merely to support the president in the courtroom. Clark himself faces potential disciplinary scrutiny over his own participation in post-election legal strategies. The broader legal context includes the Georgia indictment of Eastman, Clark, former President Trump, and nineteen others, alleging a coordinated effort to subvert the electoral process. Many of these charges were later rendered moot by presidential pardons issued in November 2025.
Eastman’s disbarment signals a clear precedent that attempts to manipulate electoral outcomes carry significant professional consequences. The ruling emphasizes that legal professionals cannot compromise their duty to truth and legality, even under pressure from clients or controversial causes. By stripping Eastman of his license, the California Supreme Court has reinforced the principle that the integrity of elections and public trust in the legal system are paramount, and that violations of these standards will not be tolerated.
This case concludes a prolonged examination of Eastman’s actions, spanning multiple years of investigation and judicial review. The disbarment formally closes the chapter on Eastman’s professional standing in California, representing a decisive affirmation of accountability for attorneys involved in undermining democratic processes.
