Cat missing for seven years found after escaping

A cat owner says she was stunned after being reunited with her missing pet seven years after he slipped out of his carrier and disappeared.

Rosie Wilson explained that her rescue cat, Gregory, arrived in her life in 2017. When he was just over a year old, he escaped while being taken to a cattery in Norfolk and vanished without a trace.

After later moving from Sheringham to Cromer, Ms Wilson spotted a cat that strongly resembled Gregory about a year ago, but convinced herself not to get her hopes up. To her complete shock, she eventually received a call from a local veterinary clinic telling her they had located her missing cat.

Whenever we thought about him, I imagined all the horrible things that could have happened, like him being run over, she said.

Gregory originally came from an RSPCA centre, where he had been found as a kitten in a hedge. For years, Ms Wilson wondered what had become of him, describing the uncertainty as heartbreaking, until Cromer Vets contacted her.

I was so nervous sitting in that waiting room. When they finally brought him in, he looked healthy, calm and absolutely wonderful, she said. I knelt down and he came straight over and rubbed against my face. Hes such a confident, happy little cat. Whatever hes been through over the last six or seven years, hes clearly experienced a lot of kindness.

Emma Broughton, head veterinary nurse at Cromer Vets, said Gregory had been regularly visiting a nearby workplace, where staff began caring for him and came to see him as part of their everyday environment.

Posters were displayed in an attempt to find his owner, but nobody responded at the time.

Eventually, staff decided to scan him for a microchip. When I checked him, we discovered he was microchipped, which gave us real hope of finding his owner, Ms Broughton explained.

Although Gregory was registered, she noted that many cats brought into clinics and rescue centres are not as fortunate and do not have a microchip.

Despite microchipping becoming a legal requirement for cats in 2024, some still fall through the cracks. She urged owners to ensure their contact details are current, especially if they change phone numbers or move home.
